Trying to Get Pregnant

Intro and a luteal phase question.

Hi, I'm Ashley. DH and I have been married for 3 years and we have a 1 year old. This is our second cycle TTC #2. I've been using OPKs to try and see what my body is doing since I got AF back in March, but I started temping today (CD 2). Hopefully my temps will show something different than the OPKs.

It looks like I have a short luteal phase. I'm still BFing a lot, so that probably explains it. My longest has been 10 days (rarely), but the shortest was 7 days, and it's usually 9 days. This of course is based only on OPKs and CM, but the pattern is consistent. Is this something to be concerned about at this point, or is it something I can ignore until we've tried for a while longer?

Feel free to tell me I'm being ridiculous. :)

Re: Intro and a luteal phase question.

  • I was just lurking on here, and thought I could help.  I was temping and had very short luteal phases after going off bc.  First 6-7 days then 8-9 days.  I read that anything 10 days or less is a luteal phase defect and started freaking out.  After 2 months being off bc I went on B complex vitamin. The next month my luteal phase was still 9 days.  The month after that, I got my bfp! So I don't know if the B complex worked or it's a miracle baby or what.  My period that I expected to come 9 days after I ovulated never came, and the test was positive about 5 days after that.

Long story short, try some B complex vitamins, and I would try making babies for a little while, and see how it goes!

Thanks for the tip. I might try that. How much did you take? Congratulations!!

  • That's what I thought too. Thank you!

Sorry for the two posts. I don't know how to quote 2 people at a time.

  • Hi! Welcome back.  My luteal phase has been 8-11 days except for one freak 16 day.  I tried taking B vitamins for a few months and didn't see any changes.  When I talked to my OB/GYN about it, he said that it's not something to really worry about.  He also said that he sometimes treats it with Clomid, but wouldn't want to start that until it had been at least a year TTC because it has some major side effects and increases the chances of twins.

  • Hi,

I figured I'd chime in since I am also TTC#2 and just 1 week ago weaned by 19 month old. I have been pregnant 3 times since TTC#2 and miscarried all 3 times. I started charting after my first m/c in March. My LP was about 10 days..I was told that my 1st M/C was probably due to a chromosal abnormality which is common but wth 2 more, obviously something wasnt' right. I went to a RE and he said he was 99% sure that I was one of those women who couldn't sustain a pregnancy while breastfeeding due to hormonal issues... After the 3rd m/c i made th edecision that no matter how hard it would be for DD, it was time to wean in hopes that that would enable my body to sustain a pregnancy.

I am not telling you this to scare you but only to let you know it is common and fixable! If you are serious about TTC & B6 and cream doesn't work.. you could consider decreasing a feeding or shortening one of the feedings or so.. and see if that helps... anyways, I wish you the best of luck!!!

Thanks! Interesting that people respond so differently to B vitamins.  Yea, I am definitely not looking for Clomid any time soon. GL!

I'm so sorry for your losses. I really hope you get a sticky baby very soon!

I appreciate the info. It's definitely better to go in with your eyes open. And nursing for 19 months is amazing! I'm starting operation night weaning tonight. We'll see how that goes. Hopefully he isn't too traumatized, and I get a few extra LP days.

  • I started charting last month and had a LP of only 8 days, so I started taking vitamin B (100 mg per day) for this cycle as a test.  Today is 10 dpo for me with no sign of period so I'm taking that as a good sign!  I'm only trying it this month though because I heard you should talk to your doctor first because too much can have a side effect on your liver!   Good luck!

Thank you, I appreciate that!! We really have our FX for our next BFP (don't we all ;)

My DD was one of those litte stickers who refused a bottle, a binky, everything.. until a sippy at about 9 months old and that was only at my mothers house (her daycare)!! So... it has been a long road. I enjoyed it but was sooo tired and ready. Especially after the emotional roller coasters with miscarrying. Some tips on weaning (and i apologize if you already know this or have heard this millions of times!) but ABSOLUTELY start with the day feedings. For weaning the day I tried distracting her with food, snacks, drinks.. playing.. anything to get her to longer between feedings... once the feedings were more spread out, I gradually decreased her feedings once a week and she was down to only nap times.. def take those last. After she didn't miss the day ones anymore... I started with the night feedings and those were the worst! I just gave her lots of hugs and told her she was a big girl now and didn't need to nurse. I was so thankful she actually understood! She still asks every night and hangs her head... but I know she will be fine and that in the end, it was for the best. Anyhow, I just wanted to share some tips that worked for us. Hopefully your LO takes a bottle or binky and it won't be so heartbreaking... . I wish you & your LO lots of luck with the weaning!

Sorry it's taken me so long to respond - I took B complex with 50 mg b6 and 50 mg B12 - heard it's good to start there and increase to 100 after a few months if there's no change.   Thanks and good luck to you!
