LLL and vaccines?

Warning: this is probably controversial

So, I am a member of my local LLL chapter. I love the BF'ing support I receive, but a lot of their other parenting theories aren't for me (no criticism, just not what I do). We all bring our LOs to the meeting, so there are usually at least 10 babies/toddlers in the room. I was stalking some members' FB pages Embarrassed and it appears that they are anti-vaccine. My baby is vaccinated, but there are only so many vaccines a 5 month old has. Is it crazy that I'm a little weirded out about bringing my baby to play with all these non-vaccinated children? What would you do?

Re: LLL and vaccines?

  • I wouldn't worry too much, but I live in a neighborhood with lots of unvaccinated kids-- we can't avoid it.

I just don't let her lick anyone.

Well, unless I know they have rich parents.... jking :)

  • Not that I mean any disrespect for anyone who does not vaccinate their child...but that child can stay the heck away from mine!

I'm not saying I believe in every vaccine offered...when it comes time I will most likely turn down chicken pox, most most vaccines have a really good reason behind them and I was vaccinated from those diseases and turned out fine so I'm not against my children being vaccinated against them.

Then again after mothering a premie I became a really intense, dont touch my kid, type of germaphobe...

Lol! I freaking love you bunnymama! OP, I get where you're coming from. I might feel weird too but at this point your LO has already been around the other babies right? It's a personal decision and one you have to be comfortable with.

  • It would make me uncomfortable, so I totally understand where you're coming from. IDK what I would do- I might keep going but also look around for another mom group that I felt better being a part of?

  • Just curious...

What is the risk of a vaccinated baby being around a non- vaccinated. If they have one of the illnesses there is a vaccine for, isn't your child or a vaccinated child already building antibodies for/against.

  • I wouldn't want my baby around any babies I knew weren't vaccinated. I do not think that's crazy.

Thats kind of my thought.....LO's get vaccines to protect against the diseases, no? The ones at risk would be the other kids, not yours.

And unless you are going to interview every mom of every child your baby is going to be around it may be something to get used to...or keep your child at home all the time. There are going to be un-vaccinated kids in every school, store, pool, dr office, and group that you may interact with. Unless its specifically a pro-vaccine group (if such a thing exists?)

Ultimately it's your choice, you're the mamma :)

  • I would be hesitant.  The un-vaccinated kids could be carriers for diseases that your LO is too young to be vaccinated for.  If one of them is a carrier of chicken pox yet hasn't shown signs, they can still pass it on and your child is at risk for contracting the disease because he/she is too young for the vaccine.

There are only so many vaccines a 5 month old gets. For instance, she hasn't had the MMR vaccine yet (that usually starts at 1 year). So, if a toddler in the group comes in with measles, my DD could very easily get it bc they come in such close contact. When my child is school-age, then she will obviously be much better protected against these diseases bc she will have had more vaccines.

This. Also, many vaccines come in a series, so just getting one does not provide immunity, and even then vaccines aren't 100% effective.
