Trouble TTC

How sad will the movie UP make me?

So I'm not one to watch many cartoon/children movies.  I've seen the Shrek & Toy Story series, and that's about it in the last 10-15 years.  Not that I don't like animated movies, but just that I see so few movies nowadays that I keep them to more adult fare.  After over a year of seeing pics in Siggy's with UP, I understand that there must be an IF element to it.  My question to you guys is, should I see it and cry the BIG.UGLY.TEARS.  but end up happy in the end that I saw it?  Or is it just going to cause more heartache then it's worth?

Re: How sad will the movie UP make me?

  • The big ugly tears is only in the beginning and lasts only maybe 30 seconds or so, and IMO, it's followed by scenes of a life well lived by a happy couple in love. There are more tears at the end of the montage, but then there's like 1.5 hours of the actual Up story after that.

I saw Up pre-IF and it made me teary, I'm sure it would be worse now, but I think it was tastefully done. It's by no means the bulk or a central part of the movie.

BP nailed it -- I agree completely!  It's a great movie and I would recommend seeing it... with a box of tissues for that opening scene.  In fact, if you want to see the teary part beforehand, you can find it on youtube here.  It is truly one of the most amazing scenes I've ever seen -- the director tells the entire story of a life, without words.  I bawled (and this was pre-IF).

Severe MFI. Me: supposedly all clear but eggs showed vacuoles.

IVF #1 January 2012, ER Jan 14th: 34R, 27M, 23F. Day 3: 18 embies still strong. Day 5: zero "good," one "fair," the rest "poor." Transferred 3. None made it to blast or to freeze. Jan 28: BFN.

Lucky IVF #2: Transferred two beautiful day three embies on St. Patrick's Day. BFP on HPT 7dp3dt. Beta 1 (14dpER)=106; Beta 2 (16dpER)=140; Beta 3 (19dpER)=264! First u/s 4.17.

  • I tried to watch it and only made it to the sad part at the beginning. I'm usually not emotional with movies/tv/etc, but this got to me and I shut it off. I figured if that's how it started I couldn't get through the rest!

For the record I haven't watched old yeller, marley & me, happy feet or any other movie I have heard was sad! ;)

Exactly. I was teary anyway because it's just a beautiful scene and made me feel all sorts of mushy for DH. I honestly thought the way they depict her handling the IF part of it was.... admirable? I guess. It's sad, but I look back on it now and find myself admiring her grace with it. Weird how you can admire a cartoon character.

  • Thanks Farmerlynda for the link.  Since that's really the reason I wanted to see it was any IF connection...I'm sure the rest of the movie is great, and I still may end up renting it up at least I can see what the IF part is about now without having to change out of my sweatpants LOL.

  • I agree with pps, you will cry...a lot... in the beginning, but after that it's sweet. I tend to cry easily though, so I cried a few times throughout and at the end, but the IF part is really only in the beginning.
