Ebay for Dummies (aka me)

Are any of you Ebay sellers?  I need to understand the selling process better.

I've been a buyer for 10+ years, but I just sold 2 items in the last month.

I *thought* Ebay took out their fees when the item sold.  However, today I had a charge on my Paypay for $20.22 from Ebay for "Monthly Fees."  What is this?  Is that right?  It seems awfully high to me.  Is it based on a percentage.

Any info you can give me would be a big help.
Thanks!!

Re: Ebay for Dummies (aka me)

  • I only buy, but my hubby sells a lot.  Here is what he says:

"yes, they bill monthly and if she setup paypal to pay her fees they auto-draw to pay the bill

When an item sells, and the buyer uses paypal, paypal will remove their % from your available balance. Then eBay will take their fees out monthly."

I asked about the fee being high and he said it depends on what you've sold (if they were high-priced items).

"well, if she sold at $200 I think $20 might be about right, she can check her account pay and look at fees, which will have insert fees for the listing and a final value fee on the item and shipping."

  • Hi Kelanne,

I am the author if "eBay For Dummies" so perhaps I can help. When you list an item for sale, there is an insertion fee just to launch the listing, then there is a Final value fee - and a fee from Paypal when they process the payment you receive.

If you are listing items for sale, I recommend that you run the numbers through an eBay calculator - like the one at https://bit.ly/vENsav

That way you can learn all the fees before setting your prices.

    Best,

    Marsha Collier
