What's on your Thanksgiving Menu?

We are on our own for Thanksgiving again this year, and I'm cooking all of the side dishes/desserts. Mike usually smokes the turkey. I think I'd like to try something different this year from our usual casserole dishes. Any suggestions?

We usually have a roasted-chestnut and sausage stuffing, brown sugar-pecan topped sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, rolls and of course turkey. And pumpkin pie.

So... what's on your menu this year??

Re: What's on your Thanksgiving Menu?

  • We are keeping it small this year. We'll make a turkey, sweet potato casserole with pecans and marshmallows, broccoli w/cheese sauce, stuffing and cranberry sauce. Usually I also make a creamy corn casserole, green beans and dinner rolls. For dessert we will have pumpkin pie with cool whip (love that stuff!) Smile

  • I'm cooking for the first time this weekend!  I'm nervous, and excited.  Here's what I was planning:

    turkey

    rolls

    broccoli and cheese rice casserole

    dressing

    fresh green beans

DH has made an (odd) request for corn on the cob.  So I guess I'll manage that too.

    pumpkin pie

I'll also do raw veggies for people to snack on while I'm cooking:  carrots, celery, pickles, etc.  I think I'll also make some deviled eggs, too...

  • We're going to my parents so I will help with most of the cooking, but my main contribution will be cake batter martinis.

    Saurkraut and organic sausage

Can you share this recipe? About once a year I get a strange craving for sauerkraut. And sausage makes everything better IMO.

  • I've made Thanksgiving dinner for the past several years.  Usually it's just the 4 of us (or 3, or 2, pre kiddos) This year it'll be us and some friends.  The menu is looking like this:

Turkey, fruit and nut stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, maple glazed sweet potatoes, roasted brussel sprouts, cranberry sauce, spicy cranberry relish, cornbread and pumpkin pie with fresh whipped cream.

    Yum!  I love Thanksgiving!

  • ooh perk of the hubster's job is organic pasture raise turkey for super cheap :) yippee. even though it's just the 3 of us, we're getting a whole turkey !

we'll do stuffing, rolls, mashers, gravy, green beans (i'm thinking oven roasted),  cranberry sauce only comes from a can, but luckily there are plenty of organic options :) uhm cherry cheese cake (b/c my aunt makes it every holiday and it's yummy) and maybe a pumpkin pie. no astroglide here though, we'll have real whipped cream :)

I'd love to see your stuffing and green bean recipes!   And if you don't mind sharing where did you get your turkey from?

I use this one, super simple, but I omit the sugar.  Bubbies make the best saurkraut that you can buy in a store.  I make my own though and it makes a huge difference in taste.  Bubbies is oh so good though and filled with tons of live probiotics (if you don't heat it like this recipe calls for).  We eat it kraut or another ferment raw with every.single.meal we serve.  I'll probably serve raw garlic dill carrots on Thanksgiving since we will have cooked kraut.  My kids actually ask for raw kraut though before meals so I might serve the purple one I have fermenting just to add some color to our plates and the carb fest.

Stuffing is super simple!  Homemade gfcfsf bread in the bread machine, cubed and dried, one onion, i celery stalk, 2 tbs of ghee, 2 eggs or egg replacer (I use flax and water), 2 cups homemade bone broth, parsley, sage thyme, pepper and sea salt to taste.  Bake at 400 for 35ish minutes.

We got our turkey from www.freshpasturesfarm.com.  I know Natural Grocers is selling turkeys too but have no idea if they are pastured or not.

  • these were the two places we had to choose our turkey from and both are available in Austin.

@mcgee, we normally do plain old homemade cranberry sauce, but I think I'llbe giving this one a try this year:

  • On actual Thanksgiving Day, we're going to Cracker Barrel with my grandma, so whatever is on their menu.  ;)

On Friday, turkey, corn casserole, stuffing with maple sausage and craisins, crescent rolls, sweet potatoes w/marshmallows and pecans on top.  I will probably pick up a dutch apple pie from a really good bakery here in town.
