Trying to Get Pregnant

clomid cd 3-7 = more follies?

I've heard that taking clomid on days 3-7 results in more follicles than if you take it days 5-9.  My Dr hadn't heard that and said he's comfortable with me starting on 3 or 5, that he's done it both ways.  We'd like to limit our chances of twins, so I'm thinking of starting on CD 5.  I'm starting with 50 mg.

I'm trying clomid to get myself ovulating earlier and stronger, but I do always O on my own eventually.  Anyone heard this?  For my situation, does starting on CD 5 make more sense?

Re: clomid cd 3-7 = more follies?

  • So...your doctor is prescribing Clomid when you're already ovulating on your own? Is he planning to monitor you? What CD range do you usually ovulate in when you ovulate naturally?

ETA: Nevermind. I just looked at your charts, and honestly, I don't think you O late enough to justify Clomid. I sincerely hope he's planning to monitor the crap out of your ovaries.

  • I've always ovulated on my own, but both of the REs I had seen insisted on Femara & Clomid every cycle.  I think they were trying to up my chances by having more eggs release each month.  With that being said, I think it's crazy talk to take drugs like those without being closely monitored by an RE.

Also, I don't think your chances of twins change between taking Clomid 3-7 or 5-9.  If the drugs are working like they're supposed to, you'll still have more than one egg release during ovulation.

ETA:  Also, I believe for stronger ovulation, you would need a trigger shot.  I don't remember my REs saying that Clomid assures ovulation.  I could be wrong though - does anyone else have an opinion on that?

  • If you already O on your own I'd consider starting with 25mg of clomid.

I O on my own, started with 25, dr didn't think anything would change and I was close to having to scrap that cycle due to response.

I ended up pregnant with twins.

Fuuck TTC - I'm moving on.

I've had 2 cycles where I've Oed around CD 37, after 13 days of mid cycle spotting.  In my honest opinion (and my Dr's), that issue could be corrected with a low dose of Clomid.  I'm well aware of the need for "monitoring the crap out of my ovaries".

I asked the Dr about taking 25 mg, to decrease the risk of multiples.  He thought that 50 mg would be better, but thank you for the advice!  You're the first person I've heard with who has conceived twins on 25 mg, although I knew it was possible!

  •  Honestly, the risk of multiples due to Clomid is pretty small at around 5 to 12%.  An unmedicated cycle has a 3.5% risk of twins.  I wouldn't worry about the possibility of twins that much.  It is a risk that you have to take when doing medicated cycles, but my RE doesn't believe that starting Clomid earlier reduces chance of multiples at all.  She said that she hasn't seen start day make a huge difference.

FWIW, I didn't even start Clomid until CD 9 this month.  When I had an ultrasound before my first IUI on Wednesday, there was one really nice mature follicle and that was it.  So taking Clomid doesn't even guarantee multiple follicles.
