Falling asleep on their own?

How long does it take your LO to fall asleep? We are going on 30 minutes of fussing in his crib. He's fine. I've checked everything. I've been in a couple of times to check on him, but I think we are about to hit overtired.

What's your plan for getting LO to fall asleep? DS is still rocked for every nap and at night :(

EDIT: He won't take a pacifier. He likes burp clothes better but he will take his lovey.

Re: Falling asleep on their own?

  • we've been doing CIO, but last night i tried something diff. after his bath we ususally try to read in the rocker and he freaks out. last night he went right into the crib while we listened to some music. i got down on his level and we played peekaboo through the slats. then i gave him his paci and read him 3 or 4 books while he was in the crib. he rolled over on his own and started fussing so i patted his tush and he was out in a few minutes! i'm going to try it again tonight!

DH puts him down for naps, but he does a similar thing on the sofa.

  • Umm, 9 times out of 10, DD will not fall asleep unless nursed.  She couldn't care less about being rocked, won't take a paci, or take to any other method, actually.  Yeah, shoot me.

  • First, make sure that all his needs are met before laying him down. Establish a bedtime routine and stick to it. We check on DD at 3 minutes, then 5 minutes after that and then in 10 min increments after that. Sometimes she puts up a fight, but if you stick to it your LO will quickly learn how to get himself to sleep. It took us about 3 rough nights and now she is pretty good at just going to sleep when we lay her down. Good luck!
  • DD takes 10-30 min to fall asleep on her own.  I change her diaper, sing her a song, give her a kiss and then set her in the crib (on her tummy, she just plays if she is on her back).  Most of my friends say 5-10 min for their babies to fall asleep but mine just takes longer to wind down.  I can't soothe her to sleep because she gets distracted by me and wants to play.  Good luck!  Hopefully he will start falling asleep more quickly.

  • She only takes 10 minutes max. She only fusses if she loses her pacifier. She lays in her crib and watches her aquarium till she falls asleep.

  • 10-30 minutes. DD is fine though, just moves her legs and arms a bit until she is tired.  Once she goes on her side and throws her head back, you know she is out for the night.

This.  Our girls are twins.  They have the same birthday and like you said in another post, she eats 9+ times a day.

I was totally fine w/nursing her to sleep until she started waking up 6+ times a night.  I'm trying to put her down drowsy for naps but it isn't really working.  I'm reading the no cry nap solution and trying some of that too, but I'm too exhausted to do any different at night.

crazy!  i blame it on going into labor on friday the 13th lol.  but yeah, at least we're not alone.  sometimes (like today) i can't help but wonder if i'm doing something wrong :(  it's just so frustrating and exhausting.  she just doesn't sleep (or nap) no matter what i do.  i've read ncss, maybe i should get the nap version too.  anyway, misery loves company, right?

Ha, I never thought about that.  My induction started that night.

Anyway, ((hugs)).  I know how you feel about doing something wrong.  I was actually fine w/the way she was sleeping (waking 1-3 times to eat) but since she's started this waking nearly every hour shiz 2 weeks ago I have had a breakdown practically everyday.  Good luck to us both!

  • LO is still rocked to sleep...and when I say rocked, I really mean rocked and shook until he relaxes.  He's a sleep fighter to say the least.  He has NEVER fallen asleep on his own since he was 3 months old.  I think we're trying Ferber next weekend because it's a little out of control.
  • I usually nurse Callie after her bath and she falls asleep. Should I stop feeding her afterwards??? You people are scaring me! haha

That is our routine too. Bath, nurse, sleep. Lately I've been worried about always having to nurse her to get her to sleep so I've recently tried unlatching her before she's completely out and laying her in her crib. Most of the time she will actually roll over and put herself to sleep, but sometimes I have to pat her bum or hold her in position bc I swear my DD is spastic LOL she loves flailing her arms and legs and sometimes it wakes her up. She's definitely gotten a lot better as she gets older though. GL!!

  • If I nurse to sleep it takes her about 2 minutes - when she's ready to go to bed.  We usually do a small night routine which sometimes includes a bath. I kind of judge how long the routine will go based on how sleepy she is. I can tell when she's ready to sleep because she tries to nurse.  Which means, this is the only way my LO knows how to fall asleep :(

I've read The No Cry Sleep Solution and have tried unlatching her repeatedly before she is completely asleep, like the book says. This never ends in sleeping and I usually just get frustrated and end up nursing her to sleep.
