Advice for Caribbean resorts?

DH and I are working on a trip to the Caribbean in March, and are having a hard time narrowing down where to stay. We've always done big, multi-place excursions (like Europe or Asia), so finding a place to stay for an entire trip is a new experience. I'm hoping to find an all-inclusive adults-only resort that is a little off the beaten path (I don't want to have to get to the beach early just to find a chair).  I'd prefer it not be Jamaica. Got any suggestions?

I'm SO looking forward to this! I'm hoping a little baby-making will happen :)

Re: Advice for Caribbean resorts?

  • We loved the Iberostar Grand Bavaro in Punta Cana for our honeymoon.  We liked it because it was adult only-most of the people were either younger couples on their honeymoon or older couples on anniversary trips.  The resort was not extremely full so we never had problems getting a spot at the beach or the pool.  The food was decent, great bar tenders, and it was absolutely beautiful.  I would definitely go back here or any of the many Iberostar resorts.

  • Have you guys chosen the island as yet?  Some islands have the chain resorts like Beaches and Sandals and some don't.  If you know where you're going that will narrow your search down or are you looking for island suggestions as well?

  • Yes!

Last May we went to the Excellence Riviera Cancun and it was paradise.  It's affordable and it's so amazing.  Don't be put off by it being Cancun.  It's not party central and we didn't feel in any danger at all (some people told us not to go due to the cartel stuff.)  The resort is all inclusive and it's adults only.  The food was good (some restaurants were literally some of the best food I've ever had, others were fine but we didn't have anything bad.)  Our room was the least expensive option available and we couldn't have found anything to complain about it if we wanted.  If you want any more info, let me know.  I just loved it so much that I feel the need to rave about it any chance I get.

P.S.  It's good for baby making.  Wink

  • I'd appreciate advice on resorts and islands. It's good to hear a positive review of the Excellence resort - we were looking at that in Punta Cana.  I was hoping for Turks and Caicos (just from pics), but it looks like everything there is a little out of our price range.
  • I'm a BIG fan of cheapcarribean.com

DH and I booked an all-inclusive trip to Barbados for our honeymoon through that site. They include trip insurance with (most/all) packages and we unfortunately had to use this as our bags were lost. We had to deal with their customer service which was excellent. The prices were awesome and we'd book again with them in a heartbeat!!

  • I have an amazing one that DH and I just stayed at a week ago...its called S.h.a.n.n.a.s. Cove Resort. Its on Cat Island (Bahamas), there are 5 bungalows only. Its owned by a German couple who are amazing. The water is clearer than clear, the sand white. We kayaked out as far as our arms would take us, and I would have had to swim down quite a ways to touch the bottom of the ocean, and still could see every detail of the floor. It was beyond amazing. They also are awesome cooks. The food was to die for, don't ever skip their dinners! They are just beyond friendly, and trusting, welcoming, etc. If the weather is good while you are there, Frank will take you scuba diving if you'd like. They have everything you could need at your disposal. I could not rec this place anymore. I wish I could live there. And if you have special dietary needs/requests, they do whatever it is that you need/want. A woman there at the same time had a ton of dietary issues and she just brought a list of what she couldn't eat and they cooked every meal special for her. They also pick you up and take you to the airport at no additional charge. And you don't have to make a deposit or anything. You pay for everything the very last day you are there (you make the reservation by emailing Frank). I seriously could go on and on about this place. They do have a website with pictures, and a facebook page. I found them on TripAdvisor, and no one had a single bad thing to say about them.

  • Aruba was awesome. We stayed at buccuti resort. Loved every single second.
