December 2011 Moms

for those who have gained a lot of weight

is your baby measuring big? if so how big at how many weeks? my dr keeps warning i will have a big baby. i have my ultrasound next week to gauge size & i just wanted to see if this is really true that weight gain is correlated to baby size

noone in my family or my husband's has ever had a baby over 8 pounds so i'm just wondering if i'll be the first.

Re: for those who have gained a lot of weight

  • How much do you consider "a lot" ? I gave gained 30 ( a lot for my frame and prepregnancy wt. of 105) , and baby is HUGE. He will likely be ten lbs at birth...

  • i guess over 30-35 the "recommended" amount
  • I haven't gained much weight. I lost 15lbs at first which put me severely underweight. So I gained that 15 back plus probably another 15-20lbs. BUT the doctor says I will have a big baby as well. DH was almost 10 lbs and I wasn't even 5. I'm not even 5 foot and have a 115lb build PP- so the thought of anything about average kinda freaks me out! In my experience, I don't think that weight gain has anything to do with baby's size. But it may be different for someone who has gained more.

  • I've gained a ton, like 48 lbs... my lo is big but not enormous by any means. I usually measure 2-3 wks ahead on fundal height, she is 80th percentile and one week ahead in her growth. I also have extra amniotic fluid and a ton of swelling. Hoping that means I will lose at least half of the weight right Away.
  • I'm sitting at a very festive 44 lbs of weight gain..I'm measuring behind at this time belly size wise but at his last ultrasound he himself was a week ahead. Like a previous poster I've had a ton of swelling so it's hard really to gauge how big he is- at todays visit the guess was over 7 lbs already. He's really long and apparently very cramped but thats all we know at this point. I'm not too worried about the weight- All my exercise was horse activity related and I had to cut back due to the size and attitude of my girls (at the insistance of family/OB) and I have a feeling getting them back into race shape will more than melt the pounds off.

  • I have gained about 50lbs and I started at 130lbs.I had an u/s last week at 36weeks and the estimated weight was 6lbs 7ounces.I have been measuring right on track.I was so proud at my appointment today as I had not gained weight this week.My doctor made a joke about me being at my water retention limit as thats what we believe all the weight gain is from.

My hubby is over 6feet himself and weighed about 3lbs at birth(preemie).I am 5feet and weighed just over 5lbs at birth(mom was a smoker).

  • i have only gained about 15lbs so far, but they are also measuring my baby to be roughly 10lbs at birth. i'm not sure how accurate that is, seeing ultrasound weight is never perfect, but i makes me think that your weight, doesn't have much to do with the babies.. (unless you have other factors: like GD, etc.)

it's normal for a woman who gains 2lbs their whole pregnancy, to have the same chance with a 10lbs baby as someone who has gained 70lbs.

  • One of the girls I work with knew her last pregnancy was her LAST one, so she gave herself permission to go crazy and eat for two, literally. She gained 100 lbs (!) and only had a 6.5 lb baby... Seeing her definitely made me want to be way more rational about weight gain - I'm up about 23 lbs but they haven't done any sort of baby weight estimate.

  • well I started at 144, and as of my appt on wednesday I was 180. so I've gained over 30lbs and LO at my 36 week u/s measuring at about 6lbs 3oz. When I was pregnant with DS I was also weighed 144 and the week before my c-section I was 183, and he was 8lbs 1oz at birth.  Now with DD I weighed 118 and was about 142 at the end of my pregnancy with her and she weighed 5lbs 11oz at birth.

  • she's measuring a little ahead (but my fundal measurements aren't).  At 35 weeks they told me she was a little over 6 pounds.  My OB told me this week that she's guessing that baby will be around 8 pounds if I go to my due date.  It's what I've been expecting - I was 8lbs 8oz and DH was right around 8lbs.

  • I'm in the range you are concerned about, and more than half of that was gained the first few months.  Baby was found to be in the 53rd percentile, which is fantastic, during my 7 month sonogram (because of my age, I'm getting those monthly).

  • I've gained 35 lbs and LO is measuring 5 weeks ahead. At 32 weeks he was 6.5 lbs and I go today for a u/s to checkup on his size. My OB is thinking by 40 weeks he could be 9+ lbs.

  • at this point I've gained 48lbs, which is way over what I wanted to gain (25- 30). My sons weight according to the growth ultrasound yesterday is 8lbs 15oz, at this rate he will for sure be a 10lb baby.

  • I've gained 39 lbs. and at my 35 weeks growth ultrasound the baby was measured to be 5lb 9oz.  Dr. said that was right on track, the ultrasound report put him in the 37th percentile so a little on the small side.
  • I've gained 38lbs so far and I expect him to be 9lbs +. I've never had any ultrasounds since 20 weeks though so this is speculation. DS was 8lbs11oz post poop so I figure this guy will be just as big if not bigger.

  • I haven't been given a projected weight for LO, but at my 36 week appointment, I was measuring 40 weeks. Part of that might be because he's breech. I did have an elective u/s at 34 weeks, and while the tech didn't give me an actual weight, she said that he was an average size.

Oh, and I'm on track to top out at 75 pounds gained. So there's that. My mom gained 65 with me, so I guess it runs in my family. I did wind up being a very large baby, though (10lb 4oz).

  • I've gained 57 lbs, and my baby is consistently measuring 3 weeks ahead. I also have "on the high side of normal" fluid levels and LOTS of swelling.

If he keeps growing at the rate he has been, I'll have at least a 9 pounder if I go to 40 weeks.

  • I have gained 45 lbs so far and don't have an estimate on the baby's weight, but my fundal measurements are exactly band on (even to the half-week), so I am thinking average size, but that is just based on the fundal. My feet and legs look like balloons, so I am also in the camp of hoping a lot is fluid, although I know some of that 45 lbs has also found a home in my thighs, butt and belly around baby...

  • I've gained around 35 and Dr said she is measuring big BUT she is right on track according to my weekly updates. She was 5.9 lbs at my checkup Wednesday.

  • My little guy came early, but at just shy of 34 weeks, I had gained about 30 pounds, and he was born then at 5lb 5 oz...
  • so based on everyone's answers, there does seem to be a correlation! ahhhhhh. i will let you all know what they estimate on tuesday
  • I've gained 53 pounds and baby is measuring exactly on target.  I think weight gain tends to have more to do with mom's frame than baby's size.

i have a small frame & have gained 43 pounds at 36 weeks so what do u mean by mom's frame. like big frame will have big baby?

  • I've gained 41 pounds but I also started out underweight and I have quite a bit of swelling.  As of yesterday (36w 6d) baby was estimated to weigh 7lbs 1oz.  My friend had her baby yesterday at 40w 4d and while I don't know how much weight she gained, I do know that she was measuring small throughout her entire pregnancy and her baby was 8lbs 8oz.

  • Not this time around but, my first pregnancy I gained 60 lbs. I am small and was never overweight (until then :) ). My son was born at 41 weeks and was under 8 lbs. No one in my family has large babies either. I had an ultrasound at 40 weeks, also for size, and they told me he was between 7 1/2 and 9 1/2 lbs. So, I guess they were right but, I am pretty sure I could have guessed that! So fat mom did not equal big baby.

No, I mean that how much weight mom gains is dependent on her own genetics, starting weight, and frame, not how big the baby is.   Bigger framed moms might be genetically predisposed to have bigger framed babies, but that doesn't mean they will gain tons of weight.  Babies generally weigh between 4-12 lbs when born around full term so there's not a huge amount of weight to be gained through baby alone.  Someone that gains 50 lbs during pregnancy is not going to have a 30 lb baby, for example.
