We usually can make it a year or so and I think we always get them at Macy's on sale. I use allergy covers though b/c if not, we'd be replacing every 6 months.
We like charter club down alternative (I'm allergic to down).

I loved my foam one for 6 years before it before it bit the dust. It had a washable cover. It cost $100 or something from BB&B but it was from our registry. If you just want something fluffy - Big Lots, Marshalls etc always have oodles of pillows on the cheap. HEB Plus has $5 pillows that can at least replace your lumpy ones until you can get something you really love (you'll have to try it out in the store and I know that ain't coming anytime soon with two kids)
Stolen from the interwebs (and warning, disgusting)

?Pillows house thousands of fungal spores which can trigger allergies and compromise a weakend immune system. Research shows that synthetic pillows held a greater amount of bacteria than feather pillows ? one study found that synthetic pillows had as much as five times more dust-mite fecal matter than feather pillows.? Ewww.
So, not only can a pillow affect your posture and quality of sleep (critical for so many reasons including workout recovery), but it can also affect your allergies or asthma and make it very difficult to get a good night?s rest.
Ok, back to my original question: How often should you change your pillows? According to Prevention, you should replace your pillows every year. Here?s why: ?Hair and body oils will have soaked into a pillow?s fabric and stuffing after a year of nightly use, making it a breeding ground for odor-causing bacteria and allergy-triggering dust mites.? *******
So. Note to self. GET ALLERGY COVERS FOR ALL OUR PILLOWS ASAP! Wait... how do I get one that's not an outgasing plastic. Trade dust mite poop for chemical vapors. GAH! It's so hard to find a middle ground these days!
I, too, looooove me some Ralph Lauren pillows, but always find mine at Ross/Marshalls/TJ/Homegoods for like 10-15 bucks a pop. I buy two of these a year and the extra pillows are the cheapos from Target that I get for like $4-5.
I've been using my king size pillow since I was about 15 years old. I have no plans to get rid of it and don't care how gross it is!!! I take that thing everywhere with me and can't sleep without it. I'm like a 4-year-old w/ a blankie.
In fact, 2 years ago, we drove to Indiana for Thanksgiving and I left it at a hotel in Memphis. I panicked when I figured it out (about 2 hours into our drive), called the hotel and they had found it. I asked them to keep it for me and I'd stop in to get it when we came back through a week later. I nearly died when I thought it was gone forever.
Re: Since you guys seem to be bedding experts...pillows?
We got some Ralph Lauren ones from Macy's 6-ish months ago during a huge sale.
I usually replace them when I notice that DH is sleeping with the pillow sham instead of the regular pillow.

I try to replace our main ones every year.
