Austin Babies

Is this a dumb name for a boy?

I think my brain is delerious over trying to name this kid, that I'm not too sure what sounds ridiculous anymore...  I know I could ask this over on Baby Names, but I've only lurked and never posted over there so I feel much more comfortable here.  I know how they feel about made up names, and I kinda just made this up.

Kenlan John

I love the name Kellan, DH not so much.  He suggested Kendall which I'm not crazy about.  I saw someone (a woman, I presume) on Pin ter est named Kenlyn and kind of liked the sound of it.  But I can't find a meaning anywhere that would assure me it's not just a made up name (even though it is!).

Also:  if you think the name is okay, let me ask you this.  My 14 year old neice is named Kinley.  We see her probably a half a dozen times a year.  Is Kenlan too similar?

  • Not a fan, sorry:( but FWIW, I'm not a fan of "made up" names.

  • Its not my style,  it has a En En sound that I can't get used to.  Its needs a different sound on the second syllable.

  • Also, I imagine it would get shortened to ken or Kenny even. Not sure if you like those NNs.

  • Sounds made up, not a fan. I like Kellan though.
  • Yeah, I agree.  Don't really like Ken/Kenny.  Kenlan doesn't really roll off the tongue, almost like it's difficult to say.  And I really don't like made up names, either!  We just can't really agree on any regular names this time.

Sigh.  I think I'm just gonna name him Kellan.  When DH carries a baby for 9 months, he can pick the name...  Stick out tongue

I think this is an excellent plan.  FWIW, I know 2 Kendalls, and they are both girls. (In case you need some ammo for your DH on that choice.)

ETA: If you're looking for another not very common Ke- boy name, there's always Kent.

  • Oooh, I'm not loving that at.all.  NMS.  Sorry.  :(
  • First, have you tried www.thinkbabynames.com?  They list a shitton of names that I'd never heard of.  I typed in Kenlan and the closest I got was "Conlan" which is Gaelic for "hero."

What about Kendon or Kenton?  Those both sound nice with John.

  • It reminds me of Kenalog, which is an anti-inflammatory cream.

Do it.  I'm not a fan of Kenlan.  At all.

You could always ask for more suggestions on Baby Names.

  • I'm not a fan of made up names, either.  What about Kenton or Kendrick?  Those are real Irish names.

ETA:  Or you could be a true Twi-hard and name him Cullen.  Wink

  • I love Kellan.  It was on my list.  Some days I think I should have gone with it.  :-/

Anyway, I don't like Kenlan.  It's too "made up".

Ha!  Luckily you all helped me see the light and decide against it, but if you hadn't, this would definitely be the deal breaker!

I KNOW!  I think so too!  Silly DH.  His reason for not liking it is he thinks people will call him Helen Keller or some such thing.  I doubt it and so what if they do?  There's much worse nn's he could be called, IMO!

Anyway, thanks for the input y'all, and for your honesty!  Don't worry - we will not name him kenlan!

LOL, I really doubt the school bullies are pulling out Helen Keller references these days. This seems like a "plant a seed and let it grow" situation with your DH - happens to me all the time that I will bring something up, DH vetoes it without giving it much thought, and then backtracks some time later. So I will often bring up something and just let it sit until he comes around. No, it's not frustrating at all [sarcmark]. I hope it's the same with this naming business!

Snorted out loud. I wonder if kids even know who Helen Keller is. I'll have to ask L tomorrow.

You know, my best friend said the same thing about that kids don't tell HK jokes anymore, probably because they don't know who she is (BFF has school-aged kids so I guess she would know)!

And Mimi, it's funny you should say that about "planting the seed", because that's totally how Logan got his name!  I suggested it, DH shrugged it off so I figured he didn't like it.  A few weeks later he suggested it like he had thought it up on his own!  He swears he never heard me suggest it, and it just "popped into his head" one day.

Since that hasn't happened yet this time, I think I'll suggest the name again, armed with my best "all the bumpies say it's awesome" argument.  He puts a lot of stock into what y'all say.  If I tell him the bumpies say something is all the rage, he is all for it!

  • Lie and say that when you asked what they associated with "Kellan" all the bumpies thought brilliant, handsome, and of strapping stock! Actually, I had been working on Magdalena's name with DD2, and DH was not a fan. By DD3 he'd forgotten that he'd vetoed it and I won! Proof that name seeds can take root.
