Baby Names

How would you pronounce..?

Madeline?

Dh and I are a bit at odds on our little girls name. His favorite is Madeline pronounced Mad-i-lyn. He thinks I'm crazy that it would be proncounced any other way. lol

While I don't hate it, I keep thinking it's Mad-a-line and know she would have the same problem growing up with teachers and such saying it the wrong way.

I don't like any of the spellings ending in lynn so its been a difficult one to discuss.

What do you think??

  • I would pronounce it Mad-a- Line.  Could you spell it Madelin (no Lyn spelling), but still not Line.

  • I would say  -line at the end.

  • I'd say Mad-a-line like Caroline (and I prefer this pronunciation)

  • Mad-e-line.  Mad-e-lyn is spelled Madeleine.

If your husband doesn't believe you about the pronunciation of Madeline buy the book.  The rhymes make it obvious the name rhymes with "vine."

  • In my opinion, either is correct.

"Mad-i-lyn" is what I hear more often, but when it's spelled with a "line" and not a "lyn" I would be more inclined to say "Mad-i-line."

  • I would pronounce Madeline - Mad-a-lyn

I have also seen it spelled Madelyn.

My friend just had a baby and named her Madeleine. They pronounce it "line" at the end.

But Madeleine makes me think of the cookies at Starbucks that are actually pronounced Mad-a-len.

I pronounce it Mad-uh-line. I think this is one of those names where you're gonna get either/or all of the time.

    This

same with Caroline - it could be said caro-lynn OR caro-line both are correct

  • Immediately thought -lyn, then a second later thought of -line.  Its one of those names that can go 50/50 either way.  Personally, I find this name about as stressful as the name Caroline.  Whenever I meet a Caroline I can never remember if she pronounces -lyn or -line so I avoid ever calling her by her name to avoid embarrassing us both!  I would say go for the obvious spelling or just call her Maddie.

  • IMO, Carolyn/Caroline are 2 different names.  Madelyn/Madeline can be pronounced the same way if that makes sense.

  • Mad-a-line.

     Ha ha! THIS!

Except that I only feel that way with Madelines. I had a Madeline in my class last year and had such troubles with it that I eventually started calling her Maddie for the rest of the year (which she seemed to prefer in the end anyways).

  • Thank you so much for all your responses. I hate that it can go both ways :/ It gives me anxiety!

I actually read him the book after searching it online. He never saw it before but I grew up with it so I had to show him. He still doesn't quite agree and doesn't think it matters.

Fun stuff. We were hoping to have a name before I go into labor but I don't know if that is going to happen. It took us 3 days after DD #1 was born to decide on a name..

We are horribly indecisive and I hate his names lol... Thanks for your input!!
