Re: s/o: dumb baby names

  • I taught a kid named Maverick when I lived in NC. He was adorable, so I have a fond memory of that name.

Not something I'd name my (non-existent future) kid, though. Especially since it now conjures up the images of John McCain.

  • That's an AWESOME name!

If I knew someone named Maverick, I wouldn't be capable of saying "No". It would be "That's a negative ghostrider; the pattern is full" among 257 other quotes from the movie.

Andplusalso, for the next decade, it will be pronounced Mahvrick a la Palin. Wink

  • I love a good set of matchy-matchy names, but...

I heard through the grapevine that a couple we know is naming their daughter Jill. Their son is named Jax. And their last name starts with a J. That's too cheesy for even me!

Do they live on a hill?

I used to work with a Maverick. One of my favorite guys!  I also worked with a Cactus. He was cool, too. :)

  • In the Czech Republic it used to be law that you had to select your child's name from a finite list approved by the state. Name opinion threads on The Bump often remind me of that. Smile
  • I knew a guy named Maverick.  Worked w/ him at the photo lab.  He was pretty cool.
  • Ugh.  There is a family here in town with boys named MacGyver and Maverick.  Confused  And my cousin's BF (now H) decided to give their kiddo the middle name of Maverick because it's "cool."  Really?  REALLY?!  I mean, I love me some Top Gun, but your kid is never going to be as cool as Tom Cruise in that movie.  :oP

DH's cousin named his baby Marlon.  Granted, they're in Germany, but it makes me think of Brando.  And when I think of Brando, I think about his later years which were not so great.

They have that in Germany and it's still in effect.  So, sadly, no Zaydhen for us.  Wink

ETA:  Our kiddos are going to have dual citizenship, which means we have to pick names that somewhat translate/are approved.

  • I hope you guys are sitting down, because I am about to make you feel really old. Top Gun is TWENTY-FIVE YEARS OLD. Holy moly. And approximately two of my fifty-five UT film students have seen it (I did some very scientific research, AKA a show of hands). I weep for the generation of youngsters missing out on that volleyball scene.

I actually knew about the 25 years thing, but still:  Surprise.  And I'm shocked and appalled that so few college students have seen it!  I hope you found a way to fit it into your curriculum, so you may help educate the masses on the greatness that is Top Gun!

And, Maverick is a great name for a dog.  Or a Navy pilot call sign.  That's about it.  Wink

It's from Lord of the Rings.  It's Eh-oh-winn.  And, yeah, I love LOTR but will not be naming any future kids Arwen or Aragorn.

Our first dog was Arwen. My mom was a hippie SF/fantasy geek. Loved that dog!

I'm totally OK with it on a dog.  :)  And I think Arwen is a beautiful name, but you're really setting your kid up for teasing or some big shoes to fill, IMO.  (I mean, helloooo, Liv Tyler played her in the movies.)  I'll stop my geeky-ness now.

Hilarious, except I hate that website because it always reminds me that M's name is increasingly popular, to my dismay. I always thought that by sticking with Spanish names we'd be safe. Ho hum.

And yeah, the main issue with Arwen is that you're gonna sound like you're parents are fantasy dorks. But it's certainly better than Frodo!
