3yr old - what kind of car seat do you have

We currently use the Evenflo convertible car seat for both kids - however, we also have the Eddie Bauer delux high back booster car seat.... which says it's meant for 22-100 lbs. Is it ok to use it now, DS is 31lbs.... or is it meant for more older children, regardless of the weight stats? TIA

Re: 3yr old - what kind of car seat do you have

  • DS2 just turned three 2 weeks ago.  We just switched him from RFing to FFing in his Graco My Ride 65.  He weighs 36lbs.  He will be in that for quite a while.  Our 5 1/2 year old DD2 (will be 6 in Feb) is still in a 5-pt harness in her Graco Nautilus.  I would definitely NOT put your 3 year old in a booster yet...keep him in a 5-pt harness as long as humanly possible.  It's way safer.  Our DD1 didn't go into a high-back booster until she was 6, but they didn't have as many options 2 years ago as they do even now....

  • Is it the kind that has the 5point harness?  If it does, then I think it's fine.  But I do think they need to be in the 5 point harness for as long as possible.  We recently switched DD to this one.  It's a highback booster with a 5 point harness.  When she gets older, we can remove the 5 point harness and use it with the regular seatbelt.

It's exactly like yours - only difference is that it's put out by Eddie Bauer. It does have the 5 point harness, which can be removed once he is older.

  • We have a Britax Frontier for DS.  He is in a 5 point harness.  I think a regular high back booster with just the seat belt is for when they are older...like 4 years old.

  • You might want to check and make sure that seat isn't on the Top 10 Worst Boosters list. I thought it was, but I could be wrong.

  • As others have said, you can certainly use that seat with the 5-point harness now. We moved DD into a Graco Nautilus (same type of seat) when she was just over 3 years old (which was when we moved DS to her convertible seat). FWIW DD is almost 5.5 and we still use the 5-point harness.

Can I ask where you're getting that from?  I saw a report from IIHS in 2008 that listed Evenflo Chase as not recommended, but they did a more recent study in 2010 and the Evenflo Chase isn't on that list.  Is there something else you're looking at?

It is the first one listed, right?

You're right.  For some reason my search only pulled up their lists from 2008 and 2010 (not on the worst list for 2010).  I didn't see the 2011 one.  But after reading, it seems it's bad because of the way the seat belt sits.  We don't use that anyway, she's still in the 5point harness.  So, unless I'm reading totally wrong, she's good for now but we'll need to find something new when we move to the regular seatbelt.  Thanks for the info.
