Well baby visits.

Can you tell me what takes place at your well baby visits besides weight, height, head and vaccinations?

I only ask just because I've seen a few different pediatricians at the practice we go to and they all have different things they do and check.

My favorite pedi does the least with my son so I'm just curious to see if we're missing anything important.

Re: Well baby visits.

  • At all of the ones I've been to, they will also check the baby's eyes, ears, genitals and hips and listen to their chest and palpate their belly.  They also check motor skills.muscle strength.  Then usually ask about eating, sleeping, elimination and milestones.  Some docs will ask you about safety stuff like if they are rear-facing in the car and some don't.

The new doctor we have been seeing doesn't ask about as much as the old one we had.

All he asks me is if he's STTN (I say no, he says he should, yada yada).

He did stand DS, put him on his belly and ask if he's rolling (I said occasionally - this was his 5 month appt) and he showed no concern.

I think this doctor expects me to address anything I feel is out of the norm rather than him asking me a gajillion questions. Good and bad I guess.

All of this. She always has us fill out paperwork about miles stones too.

I feel like that's kinda what some of the other docs at the practice are like, but I usually have tons of questions so it feels like we cover everything.

Besides all the routine stuff measurements, checking DS head to toe our regular pedi always asks about milestones and any past concerns if they have been resolved that kind of thing.

  • Mine are always very quick. Until we get to the part where I ask the questions.   They even have me answer questions about his development online before the visit.

This is pretty much our routine then he discusses all the vaccines we are getting that day and asks if we have any questions.  Sometimes I feel like I don't ask enough questions.

  • I feel like a fail because I never have any questions.  We've never gone in or called besides a well baby check up.  What the heck am I supposed to be asking?

This is me! At the first two visits I brought pages (literally) of questions, but at this last one I had none. I guess it's because I feel like I know DS's norm now? I feel like I've got it covered now or something. I know that's a good thing, but when he asks if I have any questions and I say "no", it's like I'm a mom who doesn't care or something.

This is what ours is like.     I don't usually ask many questions since I haven't had any health concerns for DS.   The Dr usually just asks how his sleep is, what he is eating and if he is up to date on his vaccines.
