BC options

I feel like I am totally screwed on the BC front because I can't take hormonal BC (because of my PPD history and just pretty bad experiences in general with the hormonal stuff, even super low dose), so no Mirena, and I'm allergic to copper, so no Paragard. Not that I'm wanting an IUD anyway, just based on some of the stories I've heard.

So, condoms... abstinence... or diaphragm... unless I am missing something. We used the NFP method which works very well, and worked for us several times, but I think we're going to have to look into something permanent after DD is born. I'm more than 90% sure I only want two kids (heck, I was fine with 1) but I think it'll be getting DH on board. He is willing to get snipped when the time is right, but I am afraid he's going to hem and haw when the time comes, and I'll have my hands full with two kids, and BFing (not to mention, NFP does NOT work when BFing!) so condoms it will be. Or more likely, abstinence :P

Re: BC options

  • did you decide if you'll go for a VBAC? if you end up w/ a c-section, what are your feelings on getting your tubes tied?

it's also an option even if you don't get a c-s as they can do them laproscopically. Although, according to my OB, a vasectomy is the most effective BC (after abstinence).

  • We're doubling up on permanent BC when the time comes, because when we decide for good, we really don't want a surprise.  So, he'll get a vasectomy and I'll get Essure.

  • Just fyi - the Couple to Couple Leaguie offers post-partum NFP classes and their success rate is really high. They use really conservative rules so there's a lot of abstaining but it's not all the time. The course is only 2-3 hrs on one day so it's not a huge time commitment. My husband & I just took it (NFP also worked for us before & we'll be using it going forward) and the rules are pretty straight forward. I know some other NFP orgs don't have post-partum, BF-specific rules so their method is less secure but CCL has put a lot of research into this. GL!

That is really interesting.  We've pretty much used NFP since 2007 and it's worked just fine for us.  That's great to hear that there are whole classes on it.  I totally believe in it.

Yeah, I could get my tubes tied.  I know my DH will get a vasectomy, no problem, WHEN we decide to be done with kids. He'll be as against tube tying as he would be vasectomy... that's the problem.  I mean, I'm sort of just guessing at this point, as we haven't talked about it too much in the recent months.  I'll be bringing it up again very soon.
