EF beauty/hygiene products that are not expensive?

I try to be as EFas possible while trying to stay within my budget. I also don't like a lot of products- I prefer 1 product for multiple tasks. Instead of EF-storebought cleaners, I use vinegar and baking soda for everything. I also use coconut oil for my homemade deodorant and as moisturizer and CD-friendly diaper rash cream instead of buying products from an EF brand. I am stuck on baby products, soap, and toothpaste. Any suggestions for cheap, multiuse products? Or good, EF brands that are $$ instead of $$$$? I'm not a big online shopper and would prefer to buy in store.

  • Sounds like you might want some Dr. Bronner's soap! It costs a little more than regular soap, but it also lasts a lot longer. I buy the medium size of the liquid soap and use it for shaving, washing in the shower, and light household cleaning tasks, and I have to buy a new container about every six months. A similar amount of Dove or St. Ives used to last about 2 months here, and I used it for washing only. I don't mind paying $2 more than for St. Ives since it lasts over twice as long.

  • I got Dr. Bronner's yesterday, at Target (but will be returning it since I found it cheaper on Amazon) in their makeup section. The 32oz was $16.99 and the 16oz was $7.99 I think? It was in the same aisle as their "natural" makeups and moisturizers (which many still have parabens in them....grrrr.)

  • I second Dr. Bronner's. Get the "baby mild" kind, and dilute it in a foaming soap container to make it last longer. I get it in the makeup section at Target for maybe $6? (Been using the same small bottle for my daughter for over a year in the foaming soap container.) Not expensive at all, keep in mind it's a super concentrate.

I'm doing a coconut oil/baking soda/cornstarch mix, poured into an old deoderant container, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it. Easier than applying by hand.

For toothpaste, if you don't mind not having fluoride (I use flouride- some people hate it, but I've never had a cavity in my life), I have a friend who uses this:

    1/4 cup + 1 tbsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt (a fine grind or flake- it's meant to be the abrasive)
    3 tbsp glycerin
30 drops wintergreen or peppermint extract

I've heard that you can do a 50% coconut oil to baking soda ratio, if you want to start with something easy.

Where do you buy your Dr. Bronner's?  I've heard a lot of good things about it on this board and am interested in trying it.  I, like op, like to buy in stores.

I used to get it at Wild Oats, but since Whole Foods ate them, I usually get it there now (albeit for fifty cents more per container). Many Target locations have them, as PPs have mentioned, and if you have a crunchy store near you, they might stock it too. If you are in a state that has Woodman's grocery stores, they usually have a small selection as well.

  • Awesome, thanks! ::Off to Target::
