Okay, so my LO started STTN at around 2 1/2 months old. At around 6 or 7 months she started waking up 1 time during the night, I would nurse and she would go back to bed. I figured it was a growth spurt and she was just needing to eat one more time. Now we are at almost 10 months, she has gotten progressively worse, and the last week she has been waking up several times each night. She is fussy and you have to pick her up to lull her back to sleep. I feel like I have a newborn again! What is going on?
I mentioned this to her pedi at her 9 month appointment and all she said is sometimes they get off schedule and its hard to get them back on. Really?
One thing to note is that she doesn't have any teeth yet. Could this be a teething thing? Anyone with any experience please come in! My H is also sick and not very helpful, I'm starting to lose it!!!!
Sorry, quick edit, if you think it's a teething thing would you try medicating her one night? Someone suggested this, but I'm very hesitant to do that, even if I'm tired.
Re: At my wit's end!!! Need help with sleeping problem.
I had something similar happen... STTN super early, then all of a sudden no dice.
I stopped feeding her just whenever during the day and kept her to an absolute minimum of 3 hours, preferably 4, and that helped a lot, as did her FINALLY taking to eating real food. She also cut her top tooth. Now she's from 9-5am, then I feed her and she's back down til 8.
Giving her drugs is fine as long as you don't heinously overdose her or something. That did buy us some extra time when she was teething, but getting her schedule on point is what really did it.
Thanks, I work 8-5 so I can't control her feeding as well during the day, she is in in-home daycare. She only nurses before bed and in the morning, (and now when she wakes up at night and is so fussy). She's been eating realy food for a while now. I thought that would help a while ago because it would keep her full longer if it was a hunger thing, yeah, that didn't pan out so much. I think I may try the drug thing for a few nights and see if that helps.
dont want to seem like i'm second guessing you..after all, momma knows best! but how many "real food" feedings does she get in a day? p was getting 2 & then started consistently waking up once a night, so his pedi thought he could maybe stand getting a 3rd meal a day. i dont know if it was just timing or what, but it did seem to help. now he's only gotten up at night when he's teething. i hope that's all you're going through & it's over quick. and by the way, i've opted for the drugs when he gets up too, he seems to get really upset when he wakes up at night & when he's got a low fever or is just REALLY worked up i've given him some acetaminophen which does seem to help.
My DS wakes once per night to eat...and when he is cutting a tooth there is a lot of crying (both in his sleep and more frequent wake ups). I have no problem with Motrin or Tylenol (Pediacare actually) and have used both. He's in so much pain and seeing the relief makes it worth it to me. I also use the Little Teether's teething gel. When he first started getting his first tooth - he did get an ear infection. When I called the pedi she said it could be teeth (I wasn't sure) or an ear infection and said it was up to me to come in or not - I went in and found out he was getting 4 teeth and had an ear infection. Having him sleep elevated was a great help too.
I don't have the heart to sleep train him out of this last feeding but I'm getting close...real close. I can't imagine having 7 or 8 hours straight sleep. That hasn't happened since before 2nd tri.
ETA: I also agree with Kknapp - increasing his amount of solid foods has helped tremendously too.
Thank you all for all of the advice! It's been a rough couple of weeks. She has a cold right now, which may be making it worse, but now I'm not sure it's a teething thing. It doesn't look or feel like any teeth are there and I had some friends with multiple kiddos look at it since they would know what it looks like and I don't. Like you said it may be time to try sleep training, which to be honest I don't know much about, so I guess it's time to read up on that and figure out what I want to do. It may also be separation anxiety as she has been very clingy lately. She's getting at least two solid meals a day, with a few solid snacks, I may try to increase solids as some of you have said. I didn't think about that and right now I'm willing to try anything! Thanks again!!!
LO only STTN for 4 weeks and then started getting up again. He had many things going on: he was sick, had pink eye and then started cutting BOTH top teeth in the front. I did not know about the last part until Thursday.
Had I known the teething was causing his once-a-night screaming fits, I would have given him something for it. Tonight was the second night he went back to STTN, so I am keeping my fingers crossed that he returns to himself again until another round of teething kicks in.
