Sad baby on Xmas card? *Updated!*

Some of you might remember last year when Si was 6 months old at the holidays and my MIL's Xmas letter said, "Simon always looks very sad, as if he has been watching the news."  Yep, she's a charmer.

If you know Simon, which some of you do, you know that he is in fact NOT a sad baby.  He's quite michevious and playful actually- but this is the thing.  He doesn't give it away for free.  His smiles and giggles are totally hard to get and he plays "Baby Bad A$$" a LOT.  It's totally part of his personality, it's just like my DH, completely and totally to a T.  Simon is the baby boy in the leopard pants, he's a rocker and basically is just too cool for school... and good luck getting him to smile for a camera... which of course, is unlike his brother who is like, "Camera?!?  Sure!  Take my picture!!" and smiles a mile wide with a million teeth.  Sidenote, it is CRAZY how different they are!

So, we got a family photo taken of us for our holiday card.  I must say I think it turned out cute of all of us.  But- Si is for sure NOT smiling, and when I showed it to a co-worker today she was like, "Simon doesn't look too happy to be there!" Jokingly, of course, but you know.  He doesn't look bad- he just looks like Simon.  That's him.  Omg I love him.  It's hard to explain unless you know him.

So I really want to use the photo, order the cards and get them out.  But, my future SIL will be with us at Thanksgiving and she has a very awesome camera and a good artistic eye.  So, I could have her re-shoot for us and hope for a happier shot of Simon.  But I kind of a) think it's al ong shot and b) don't really care because I like how he looks all hard and c) I just want to get the darn cards ordered and done and not drag it out!!  Do you think my MIL will call him sad again?!?!

So...  what do you guys think?  Obviously I'm leaning towards using it but I wanted my nestie's opinions.  Let 'em rip.

Update:  I found a super cute card on snapfish that had a pretty creative layout that hid what I thought were a few flaws in the pic.  I put a cute saying on it and bam!  Done. Plus, 50% off since I ordered before midnight, so I got 60 cards for a little more than $20!  Sounds perfect to me!!

I'm happy with it and I will have those suckers addressed and stamped and ready to roll by 12/1.   And that is worth a ton to me!!  Thanks for your advice and I'll keep you update don the crazypants!!  Ha!!

  • Simon is as Simon does. Send the card out as is.

  • Send em out...you like the picture, don't worry about MIL and her "sad thoughts."

Then.....have FSIL take pictures also, and if you get a great smiley Si one...frame it and give it to the ILs for Christmas. What'd ya think?

This is good!  Actually, after I got her letter last year, I packed up an envelope of smiley pics of Si with a note that said, "Here are some pictures of your very sad grandson.  Kindly remove us from your Christmas card list as your letter manages to offend every year."

Hmmm.  I wonder if she'll send us a letter or nto this year?!?!?

  • I have a boy who does not smile on cue and I've totally sent out photos of him not smiling, so in that regard, it seems in character for him and I wouldn't hestitate to share it.  But when people see those photos they don't generally say he is not happy.  They call him serious.  At least to my face! ;)

But given your MIL issue, I'd hestitate I think.  Especially if an uninvolved co-worker noticed it right away.  I'd probably attempt another photo and see if it looks more loving I guess and then decide.

But it would be hard for me to pass up all the deals for holiday cards that are out right now (40% off at shutterfly ends tomorrow).

The deals are SO good right now!  And I am so busy at work, being a music teacher in December doesn't allow for a lot of extra time for addressing cards, etc.  Grrrr.  Drinks

  • Can we see the pic?

I would honestly send it out.  Your MIL is going to find something to nitpick no matter what you do, so you might as well do what makes you happiest (and is easiest.)  If you love the picture, send it.

I do like the idea of getting your SIL to snap some other pictures and framing one as a present, but I generally think that pictures for grandparents are great presents.

  • Use the picture you want and accidentally forget to include MIL on your Christmas card list?  Wishful thinking I know...

  • Use it! I'll be thrilled if I get a shot with both my boys looking at the camera at the same time with their eyes open.

    Ha! This.

Every year you will most likely have this same issue, since he doesn't smile on cue and may not ever. the best thing to do is use the photo as is and ignore her.

  • We totally sent out a Holiday Family card with DC decidedly pouting.  He would have much rather been gawking at the ocean behind us than smiling pretty for a camera and told us so.  Meanwhile, DH & I are happy to be there and DC has a lower lip a mile long.  We decided to use it & captioned it thus:

"They just told me Santa isn't real."  And we signed it with, "Hope your Holiday is Happier!"
