Blue Around Mouth But Not Lips - What the heck?

My LO has a blue tinge in the space around his mouth. Most noticeably is the area between the nose and upper lip.  His lips are pink and he is breathing normally, the only other symptoms he's had lately is a very light dry cough - maybe only 5 little coughs in a 24 hour period and super duper fussy at nap times.  The fussy napping started about a week ago, and we're talking screaming bloody murder and arching until I rock him to soothe him.

I know blue lips are an emergency, but I've never heard about blue AROUND the lips!?!  What the heck is causing it!?

He could be wheezing and you may not know it.

  • Just a follow up, ladies. I called my pedi and she was a total witch. Said it's only an emergency if his gums and tongue are blue.  When I tried to ask more questions like what could be causing it, should I bring him in tomorrow, etc she got super snippy.  Needless to say, I'm already searching for a new pedi.  My son's mouth is blue and you question me calling?!?!!?  UN ACCEPTABLE.
  • Totally unacceptable! How long has it been blue?

  • my daughter gets the same thing. although she is not unusually fussy or anything. she does get this blue tinge between her lip and nose and sometimes around her nose and on the bridge of it. shes totally fine otherwise breathing and everything. and as soon as i start to get really worried about it it goes away. i will definitly be bringing it up to my ped.

You're so right, it is unacceptable.  I was so mad I cried when I hung up.  I wanted to rip her hair out through the phone. I just noticed the blue today.  Have noticed it once before but thought I was crazy and in a weird light.  I wouldn't have given that time another thought until I noticed it again tonight.

  • I don't know if this is the cause, but it could be perioral cyanosis, which is normal and not cause for concern.  It is just the appearance of the veins which makes the area around the lips appear blue.  Usually, if the child is actually having difficulty breathing the lips, mucous membranes and nail beds appear blue.

That being said, if you really feel your child is not breathing well, then you should bring him to the ER.

That's awful that she reacted that way!  Your pedi should not make you feel bad about having concerns as a parent.  When you find a new pedi I would call this woman and tell her exactly why your leaving that practice!

  • Not sure if this will help but my baby will get the blue upper lip as well and she usually just has a burp trapped and once I get her to burp it goes away
  • My guy has breathing issues and often gets blue around the mouth--I've talked to 3 different pedis, 1 hospitalist and 2 diff pulmonologists and all say its normal and only to worry if he is blue on gums or tongue. Ive also noticed the blue around his mouth during one of his sleep studies where he had an oximeter on his foot and he had 99% O2 level while having blue around the mouth. That being said, I would not freak out--but watch his breathing and make sure he is breathing evenly and if he is periodically breathing and you think he's doing it often then contact a pedi immediatley. Also, not sure if this has anythng to do with it--but I've heard a lot of GERD/reflux babies have this and my LO has bad reflux. So keep your eye on symptoms for this. I know it seems crazy to say blue around the mouth is normal-but in some babies it is.
