April 2012 Moms

Why do people ask opinions on names here?

I'm not asking to be critical, I'm truly interested. Does what a stranger thinks of your LO's name matter? Or is it just about feedback for things you may not have considered about the name before?

My SIL actually was swayed to change her son's name from Darrin to Hunter by a poll on FB, which I think is kind of ridiculous, so I just thought I'd ask. :)

Re: Why do people ask opinions on names here?

  • If I have ever asked, it's only to AW my amazing choices.

  • I think it's more for the feed back on things people may not have considered. Like the one name that everyone thought sounded like weed. What was it.......Kolitas???

  • Since I'm not announcing names to my friends and family, I like to post about it on TB to get opinions that I may not have thought of before. Better to learn about the negative things now than after you've chosen the name, I guess.

  • I care what strangers think because my kid is going to be encountering strangers daily for the rest of their life. If there's something that I should know (ie the majority of the population thinks it sounds like the name of a hooker), I want to know it now.

ETA: Also, I just like talking about baby names. I'm a regular over on the baby name board and I can be pretty critical. It wouldn't be fair for me to be harsh to others and not share my own names preferences.

    Really? Lol!

  • Oh, Kolitas.  There was also a woman on the BNB who was seriously considering naming her son Maverick.

I think people do it to get feedback on whether it's a terrible name, has some bad connotation or has a nickname that isn't going to be good.  Like a lot of people love the name Annalee, which is nice until you realize it sounds just like anally.

  • I think it's because we're women in a similar mindset/community.  Strangers can be harsh, but not annoy you as much as family.  I've always said, strangers acting poorly don't bother me because I don't know them, but when my family acts a fool, I get hot!  I feel like they should know better because they know me, and they know how to hurt.  I would share my names more easily here, than with my family.

    I often wonder this.

  • I think sometimes people have valuable input that maybe you haven't considered yourself.  Like, I will that someone had told me that DS's name Maxwell William could be shortened to Max Will and that was kind of weird/funny.  I never thought of it until 6 weeks after DS was named!

Or maybe you're unsure of a name and you either need to hear that it's great or that you need to keep looking b/c you were right that there just wasn't something quite right about it.

I'm really struggling with our girl name this time and hearing that others like it or that my reservations are misplaced or easily overcome is helping me warm up to it.  I wish I could find a name I loved, but I don't think it's going to work that way this time.

I asked my dad what it meant one time, and that is what he told me. I think it's spelled "colitas," though.

    LOL!  Never realized that :)

Agree with what most said.  I think most don't want to share their names to close family/friends so they get opinions here knowing that at the end of the day they are going to pick whatever name they want anyways.

People here said Brianna and Brian as my girl/boy name is too matchy which I agree but it's what H and I have agreed on so we're still using it.

  • To each their own, but the only opinion that matters to me is my husbands.  We have agreed on our names and are happy.  If someone doesnt understand our choices well ... as I said, to each their own

  • Because I too like people to tell me how awesome I am at choosing names or to check me and say "Gisa, your kid is gonna get the crap kicked out of them for that name." I also just like seeing the names we've picked
i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.

LOL @ Annalee. I had a patient last week who did name her baby Maverick!

I agree I like to hear what others think. I shared my names here and not many people liked our girl name but when i share with friends/family I get a pretty good reception of it. Not that it matters, I got a lot of negative opinions on Logan and we went with it anyways and it suits him perfectly.

Definitely.  When I posted our name choices someone mentioned a nn that I hadn't thought of and don't like.  If you're having a hard time deciding between some names, I think it's very helpful to get some feedback.

  • I also definitely like seeing people share their name choices, I just wonder about the opinions of strangers part.
  • I think also some people just may not be able to make a choice, they are torn between a couple options and by someone giving their opinion on one over the other it may help. For me personally, I know what I want to name my child and don't need help deciding or want any opinions but that's just me.

Like PP's said sometimes spellings, pronunciations, meanings etc.can mean something different to another person and this can be helpful.

  • I shared my name here to see what people would think of her name when she starts school and later in life. My husband and I had the name picked years and we would not change it for a million dollars. However, I didn't want my child to struggle during her life trying to correct people on how to pronounce her name... thankfully, I got really good feed back.

We are still using the name but we changed the spelling so that it would be pronounced the way we want it, we changed it from ALYANA to ALIANNA. Same name but it flows better. So thank you April mom's.
