Does anyone else have a baby that does not send feeding cues that are entirely clear? I want to be feeding my baby on demand but I have such a hard time figuring out whether she wants to eat based on her cues alone (she's gaining weight appropriately, though, so ultimately we figure it out). I've read all of the lists of feeding cues over and over and I just can't figure it out, particularly because she likes to thrust her tongue before she goes to sleep, for example.
She's also not the type of baby to reject the breast. So even if she's not hungry, she'll latch on and then just comfort suck. I guess that I don't mind that but it would be nice to occasionally be able to save myself the trouble going through the whole rigamaroll of taking off my shirt, finding the nipple shield, etc. only to find out that "No, she's not hungry right now."
Re: Unclear Feeding Cues
I have the same issue here! I go more by a schedule (awful, I know!) but then add in a few feedings here and there when I think I see some more clear signs. You'd think I'd have this figured out by now! But it just seems like she always wants to suck!
I'll have to listen for that cry! Interesting.
This! It's the key.
