Pre-School and Daycare

kids backpack

Hi,

DD will be starting preschool in January. We were told that she'll need a backpack big enough to fit an extra change of clothes and artwork. Any suggestions? Also any suggestions for lunch boxes?

 Thanks!

Re: kids backpack

  • FYI, watch out for "preschool" sized backpacks if you need something big enough for artwork. You can't fit, say, an 8x11 piece of paper in the preschool size unless it gets folded/crumpled, IME.

I got DD1 a PBK backpack, size small, for preschool. She doesn't need a lunch box right now, but I got her one of the PBK ones anyway. :)

She can handle the backpack just fine in terms of getting it on & off by herself, and given what she needs to carry, it's never too heavy for her. It's a little big, but will definitely last at least through kindy.

Land's End and L.L.Bean have nice kid backpacks, too.

  • I recommend getting something cheap at Target or Toys R Us.  I got DD a Strawberry Shortcake one when she was 15 months (not that she could carry it then, but it was cute to watch her try!) and she's still using it.  It's roomy, and I won't be upset if she wants a new one for next school year.  It gets dirty and dragged around.  I'll get her a nice LL Bean on in a couple years, but right now the $10-$15 version has gotten 2 years of use!

It is big enough for a change of clothes but little else. IME, the art work doesn't fit in backpacks anyway bc most are much too large for even a large or standard size one.

  • We love our Landsend backpack.  It's pretty heavy duty...great quality.  And you can send it back for repairs if the zipper breaks.  We initially bought a Thomas one, but it ended up being too small.

  • I bought my DD the basic backpack from LL Bean.  They are super well made and the right size to get her through most of elementary school, but manageable for a petite 3 year old to carry herself.  I think it came to about $30, with free shipping, and we had her name embroidered on it to make it easier to identify.  I compared it to the cheap ones at Target, and they were close to $20, so I'm pretty happy, especially since half the reviews on the LL Bean website were from college kids who said they were still using the same LL Bean pack they got in elementary school!

  • I got this one for my twins from Lands End. They are currently on sale for $7.99. It fits a change of clothes and a 9x12 file folder that the teachers sends notes home to me in. It is great quality and I am hoping to get 2 years use out of it.

They have one in pink and one in purple. I think they must be out of stock on the pink ones.
