Anyone donating the placenta?

I asked at my OB today about donating cord blood. She said the hospital doesn't offer that, but they just started working with a company to donate placentas. She said they're being used to help with transplants and that new organs seem to take better using parts of the placenta rather than artificial tissue somehow... I forgot exactly how she described it. Otherwise the placenta is incinerated as medical waste so I signed up. I wont be needing it!
Anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard of it but I'd totally donate it. They just incinerated mine with DD and I'm sure they'll do the same with this one.
My clinic is doing a research study right now for donating the cord blood so as long as I qualify I plan to donate that. I have the consent form in my email at work, I just have to get around to filling it out and starting the process to have them see if I qualify!
FWIW I am an organ donor, too.
I had never heard of it either. I'm surprised they do that but not the cord blood, as that seems far more popular. I'd ask about it though, because they weren't going to mention it until I did.
I agree, I'm also not a plant-it-in-the-backyard or even an eat-it kind of person myself!
I mean this as un-snarky as possible...

Edited to add: because the only time I hear most people talk about lotus birth is in a joking manner. Gah, there is no way to ask that without coming off like a royal bish but I am seriously curious if you are or aren't kidding about lotus birth.

ETA now I feel bad because you were so polite about my potential wish for a lotus birth... but no. I just can't see doing that.

when you mentioned it! LOL and I can't see doing that either. You know, they make special little diaper looking things for the placenta for moms that want a lotus birth that are all lavender scented etc... all I gather from that is "OH MY GROSS! that's to mask the dead tissue scent then!"

oh thank goodness I was starting to feel really bad!!
yeah... it took almost three weeks for DS's umbilical cord to fall off... I cannot. even. imagine. **shudder**
but hey! do what you gotta do, right?
I suppose.... hahaha
think about it, 3 weeks toting around THAT?! Yea, I don't think so! I tend to be crazy at times but that? That is on a totally different (higher) level!
