pumping question

OK, so I have a question for you moms who are bf and pumping. I have been bf exclusively since baby was born, but want to start pumping so i can let dh feed and eventually, I can go back to work. Anyone have any tips about how to start, when to pump or how to transition? Baby still bfs about every two hours, so do I pump in between? Do I skip a feeding to pump? Thanks ladies!

Re: pumping question

  • I started pumping occasionally around 3 weeks.  The first time, I pumped in the morning after Lily had already fed.  I had a manual Lansinoh pump and just pumped one side and put the bottle in the fridge for DH to give her later.  After that, I pumped when he was feeding her to replace what we used and so my body knew it was time for a feed.  I'm trying to get a small freezer stash, too, so now that I'm used to it I do a bonus pumping session most mornings after Lily's first feed to freeze (easier now that my mom treated me to a small single electric pump).  Good luck!

  • I do the same thing- I pump after she's eaten in the morning and while she's having her morning nap.  I have a Medela In Style pump, so I can pump both sides at once although I haven't tried that yet.  That seems like an advanced move.  :)  I pump one side at a time and I give it 10 minutes or so on each side (more if milk is still flowing and she's still sleeping, but 10 minutes is usually enough).  I get between 3-4 oz. each time, although when I started it was more like 1.5 oz each time.  Good luck!  It's so great to have someone else be able to feed LO!

  • I just started pumping last week and also suggest mornings b/c there's more milk.  I do it during DS's morning nap.  Also, my first time pumping hurt-- start off on a slow rate setting!

  • I pump first thing in the morning when I can get the most milk. I get about 9 oz total at that time. I also pump after every feeding. I have about 70 oz of freezer stash so far and a few bottles ready to go in the fridge. I SAH but want DH to be able to give a bottle. If I do bottle feed I make sure to pump for that feeding session, even if it's the middle of the night. I have a PISA so it only takes me 10 minutes to pump each time which is nice too

  • The first week I started pumping was just for stash. I pumped once a day, after his morning feeding- both sides since I have a double electric. I got about 2 ounces from each breast then, now I get about 3.

Once that was established, we introduced a bottle everyday and I added a second pumping session to replace that feeding. I get about 4-5 ounces from each breast.

I pump for 20 minutes, and do a second letdown after the first 10. At first it's important to keep pumping even after the milk seems to be done. That's going to signal your body to produce enough at that time to feed and pump.

I highly recommend getting a hands free breast pump. I don't like pumping and much prefer breastfeeding, but it was even worse when I had to sir and hold the horns!
