What is this pain in my belly? Not contractions...

I am having a pretty intense pain around my rib cage where my belly starts and around my belly, but it's more of a constant ache, rather than a contraction. I have been having lots of contractions over the last few weeks, just none that are regular for more than a short while, but this is a very different pain. I had an appt today and was 3 cm dilated and 80% effaced when she checked my cervix and was having some strong but not terrible contractions earlier, but they have stopped and now I am feeling this pain instead (and my belly is not tightening at all during this pain). I have a call in to the office, but while i wait, has anyone else experienced this?

  • On a scale of 0-10, 0 being no pain and 10 being the very worst pain you could possibly imagine - what number would you give the pain?

Is it more on the right or the left or evenly spread across?

Is it worse after you eat? Associated with nausea or vomiting?

Does it radiate into your back like into your shoulder blades?

Any recent cough/cold/fever? Any yellowing of the skin (look at your palms and the whites of your eyes)?

At ANY point in time, has the pain felt more like your heart (above the ribs behind your sternum) ?

  • Could your muscles be tired from contracting?  I had so many for the last few months of the pregnancy that my stomach would ache constantly at the end of the day.

Maybe a 6, at it's worst when I am upright Evenly spread across I haven't really eaten since it started, but I do feel a little nausea at times It goes around to my back, but lower than my shoulder blades, more like a tight band around my midsection, but my belly is not contracting, I mean that the pain is like a band No No The dr on call at my ob's office said to drink water and lie down on my side for an hour and call back if it doesn't improve, and that they may want to see me at that point.

Possibly, but this is a different pain than I have felt before... Maybe, though.

The bullets and  numbers never work! It lets you space things a little closer, like when you make a list, but they never show through at least on my computer. It's weird.

Anyway, your description of symptoms doesn't paint a picture of any particular life threatening diagnosis. But overall, it sounds like early warning signs of gallstones. Did you deliver your other children by CS? If so and you're having another, you'll classically need to have your gallbladder removed (cholecystectomy) at about 3 months PP. I've never looked into why, it's just a common trend I we see.

  • Thanks!  My mom and sister both had their gallbladders removed at a young age (my mom was 27 and my sister was 19), so I suppose that wouldn't be too surprising.  For now I am just going to try to get a good night's sleep and see how it is in the morning.  If I am still in pain, I will go back in to see my doctor and reevaluate then.  I appreciate the response!

  • My whole stomach was achy for the last few weeks, maybe the last month? All over sensitivity, kinda like my muscles were sore, and it was tender to the touch. My doctor called it "uterine sensitivity" and told me not to worry about it. Although, it was painful enough I was thinking about it constantly.

The end is near! Good luck!
