Formula Feeding Mamas

Have any of you bumped your LO up to 5 oz yet? DS is doing 4oz every 4 hours, but lately he's been sucking that down, and seems to be getting hungry earlier. We've started giving him 5oz before bed, and he takes it fine, but I don't know if he's too young to start doing 5oz, and if I start giving him 5oz, should I do it every 5 hours? Just curious! Thanks!

Re: Formula Feeding Mamas

  • I was actually wondering the same thing. My DD is on 4oz every 3 hours but she seems to be looking for more afterwards. She has had some major spit up lately so I am afraid to bump her up to 5oz. I am going to talk to my pedi on Monday.

  • We are BF & supplementing with formula because my supply has been pretty low. And he HAS to gain weight with his new heart. But after he BF's he will take anywhere from 2oz to 4oz. And I know my supply has increased since he has been out of the hospital. So he is taking in quite a bit. But he is gaining weight like a champ ;] He eats ABOUT every 3-4 hours.

  • My little guy will be 6 weeks on Friday, and I have been giving him 6 oz bottles for a week.  He usually only eats 4-5 oz of it, but occasionally downs the entire 6.  He is averaging 24-28 oz daily.

  • DD gets 4 oz every 3 hours.  Most days I could set my watch to her eating schedule she is so regular (and I feed her when she is hungry - this is her schedule, not mine). Then we have some off days where she will down 4 oz and then an hour later be hungry for more.  So then I offer her 2 oz.

  • I just asked my pedi this question yesterday.  She said to go by how hungry he seems.  I can do 4 or 5 oz as long as he doesn't spit it up afterwards.  LO is 11 lbs. 6 oz. so he can handle 4 to 5 oz per feeding.  It may depend on their weight also.

  • My LO is younger than yours, but he already takes 5 oz once and a while. Usually 3-4. I agree with one of the pp who said they follow their child's signs and just feed them when they are hungry... GL.

  • DD will drink anywhere from 2.5 to 6oz in a feeding. Our pedi said that since she is of average weight (appx 50th percentile) that us feeding her however much she wants whenever she is hungry is fine. As long as they are saying your baby is gaining too much, it should be fine to up the amount. You may find that upping the amount = longer stretches between feedings. I noticed that this was the first step to getting her to sleep longer stretches at night.

  • DD is bf and ff, and we will give her 5oz in a bottle or 2-3oz after a nursing session if she's still hungry.  I don't think your LO is too young for 5oz.  If he's taking it and not vomiting it back up, then it seems like he is hungry and needs it.

  • my ds has been labeled a hearty eater by his pedi. the pedi said if he is hiungry feed him as long as he can handle it and doesnt give it back. my ds has been doing 4-6 oz during the day and during the night i do 2 or 4 oz depends on how awake awake and hungry he is.
