Need a break...

FTM here. My LO is latched on all day every day....is this normal for a 2 wk old? I feel bad for my husband and family member since she only wants to be on the boob...no one can hold her at this time because she is rarely content.

Can anyone enlighten me? When do they become more efficient eaters? How long does your LO eat and do you let them use you as a pacifier at this age?

Help? Lol.

Re: Need a break...

  • We didn't have this problem. But I only let him eat for max 20-25 minutes on each side. He normally starts to fall asleep at that point anyways. If he is being silly and trying to use me for a paci, we just switch sides. And he gets that he can continue eating.

Hope she becomes a more efficient eater for you, soon! ;]

  • The first couple weeks he seemed to be on the boob all the time. He was a lazy nurser and took 45 to 60 minutes to nurse both sides. I would definately try a paci. If ds was on the boob as much as he uses the paci, he would be on there 24/7. Some babies just have a very strong need to suck. My ds1 hated the paci and would only take one the first week, after that he never had one. Ds2 definately loves his paci and it's been a life saver! I swear to you it gets better! It take awhile but hang in there!

  • LO ate alot in her first 2 weeks. Then the 3rd and 4th week hit and she got a bit more of a "schedule", meaning she'd eat a little less and be awake a lot more. Right now she's building your supply so I would get comfy, grab water and watch tv or read.

DD hates pacifiers. She really didn't like the gumdrop one (from the hospital) so I got the Nuk ortho one, which she tolerates but she prefers boob. It's tough.

P.S. Beautiful picture of your family!

  • Make sure you're hearing swallowing. It's a soft "cuh" noise. We've had limited luck with the Nuk pacifiers.

  • Sounds like your nipples=pacifiers.  C hates all pacifiers except for the Soothies/Gumdrops...  They put her right to sleep!

  • DD loves her pacifier.  We introduced it on day 2- it really soothes her.  We haven't has any nipple confusion and she's an awesome eater.  She generally eats for 10-20 mins, sometimes longer.  If it's been 40 minutes and she just seems to be sucking to sooth herself I give her the pacifier and she's content!

  • they gave ds the gumdrop paci in the hopsital, but he didn't really like it and it caused some latch problems. when we got home we got him some nuk pacis which he liked better, but then some one gave us some mam ones and they are the winner! maybe try a few different ones.
