Austin Babies

taking an infant to the movies

Have you done it? I really want to see a movie this weekend. Our baby is 3 months old, was thinking of going during the time she naps hoping she would sleep through it but wondering if it would be too loud? any advice would be helpful TIA!

  • Can you go to baby day at the Alamo on Tuesday instead?  I did that a couple of times and it was great.  Both times DS cried a little but mostly slept.  Personally, I would be hesitant to take him to a movie on the weekend though, there will be a lot more people there than on baby day.

Ditto.  We went to Baby Day at Alamo all.the.time.  They keep the lights slightly up and turn the volume slightly down, too, so it is a much more "baby-friendly" experience.

  • Unless it's an Alamo baby day, please don't. Even if you leave the instant she fusses, you've already ruined the movie moment for everyone =( At least for me. When I go to watch a movie, it's to relax and get away from my kids for a few hours. Hearing someone elses baby fuss/cry raises my blood pressure and makes me want to scream. So do people talking on cell phones. I don't mean to compare your baby to rude people but the effect is the same on me - I get angry at the intrustion to my movie experience.

Yes, I totally understand feeling trapped at home, lonely and isolated. But there are lots of other things you can do to help with those feelings without pissing other people off and missing half a movie you paid to see at the same time!

Plus, I really do think 3 months is still a little too young to be sitting a movie theater with that many people. It's already RSV and Flu season. A theater is a very confined space for everyone to be coughing in.

I think Abby was 4-5 months old the one and only time I tried to go to an Alamo baby day (and yes, it was at the same start of the rsv/flu season, I'll save you the math!) I was "OK" but it wasn't the great relaxing cool fun outting I thought it would be. Sure, she nursed and didn't fuss much but then I had to leave to change her diaper. Twice. and I never feel like I really know what is going on when someone else fills me in on what I missed.

And if there's one thing I've learned in this whole parenting thing is that JUST when you have the perfect schedule and you need your baby to nap for a particular time - they won't. They just won't!!! It's diabolical.

  • Please don't take a baby unless you are at the Baby Day at the Alamo. Crying or fussing (or even just happy babbling) babies are really distracting and aggravating in a theater. I have had this happen a lot over the last year or two and the parents seem absolutely miserable having to get up and leave the theater fifty times in two hours. It makes me wonder why they even bothered. :(

Truer words have never been spoken.  Every time I think I have DS's schedule figured out, he up and changes it.  Every time.
