What to do when initials create BAD?!

So we're 95% set on Brooks for our DS, but here's the issue. We've always planned on using August as a middle name-- it's a family name and we both love it. Problem? Our last name starts with a D. And the other problem? We don't have many alternates-- the ones we do have just don't sound right with Brooks (Charles is one, and the "s" endings in both doesn't work for me, the other is Carter, and rhymes with our last name). This obviously creates the initials BAD. Can we overlook that-- or is it just...bad? LOL.

So, what would you do? Our alternate names are Lincoln and Everett. I always hear good feedback on Everett, I just worry it's too trendy. If we use either of these names, we'll use August as a middle name for sure.

I'd hate to pick another name just because of the middle name issue, but it does matter to us!

  • I don't think it is that awful.  I think it would create chuckles throughout life but it is not as "bad" as something like ASS.

  • I'm intrigued-- I thought most people would say not to use it. This gives me hope that maybe I overreacted!

  • Not a deal breaker IMO.

  • I don't think it's a deal-breaker either, but have you considered switching the names if it bothers you that much? August Brooks D----

Ehh, we just don't love August as a first name. We want the name we choose to be nickname proof, and I don't believe in giving a name and then calling them by something else (middle name included).

  • I don't think there's a problem with it.  It will be a novelty for a short amount of time, but it's nothing terrible, as PP's mentioned.

  • I don't think you should worry about it. For one, when you sign initials on paperwork it's only your first and last name. Secondly, if you get thing monogrammed it'll actually be bDa so I don't think anyone will really make the connection. I can honestly say I don't know a lot of my friend's middle names and I've known some of them for 15+ years! No one knew mine till I sent my wedding invitations out. BAD, to me, is not really an issue!

    Yes

& OP, I wouldn't worry about it. I think it's funny in a cute way now, and something he could have fun with later. Just don't be too surprised of people feel vocal about it. You know?

I agree.  If we use our front runner name, her initials will be OCD, doesn't bother me at all.

  • I think you are fine..A girlfriend of mine just told me the name she likes (she isnt pregnant) and the initials were STD, I pointed it out to her and that I would never  do to a child lol but BAD is alright
  • Use it! Great name.

I had a childhood friend whose initials were BS. He thought he was cool stuff, especially since his dad's initials were GAS.

Before I got married, I liked using all three initials: KJS. Once I got married, my last name starts with a J, and now I just use KJ. All that to say that he would have to use his middle initial if it bothered him.

  • Those are my mom's initials.  I wouldn't worry.  Like others have said, as long as it doesn't spell anything offensive, I wouldn't read too much into initials.

  • WHO CARES!  No one cares what initials spell out.

My MIL's initials are S-A-D...it has nothing to do with her personality.

  • Totally fine. Go for it!

It is fine, imo. Nothing offensive.

The only ones I would stay away from are things like KKK, FU.K, ASS ... etc.

    This.
And FWIW. My married initials ended up being BAD. Doesn't really bother me.

  • We didn't name DS Andrew Robert because the initials spelled ARF. We did name him Andrew Travis though which gives us ATF (Alcohol, Tabacco and Firearms!) lol.

Really, though, we liked Travis better, so it worked out well for us, But if you love the names you have, no need to change because of the initials.
