My LO has a blue tinge in the space around his mouth. Most noticeably is the area between the nose and upper lip. His lips are pink and he is breathing normally, the only other symptoms he's had lately is a very light dry cough - maybe only 5 little coughs in a 24 hour period and super duper fussy at nap times. The fussy napping started about a week ago, and we're talking screaming bloody murder and arching until I rock him to soothe him.
I know blue lips are an emergency, but I've never heard about blue AROUND the lips!?! What the heck is causing it!?
Re: Blue Around Mouth But Not Lips - What the heck?
I would also call the pedi.
He could be wheezing and you may not know it.
GL!
You're so right, it is unacceptable. I was so mad I cried when I hung up. I wanted to rip her hair out through the phone. I just noticed the blue today. Have noticed it once before but thought I was crazy and in a weird light. I wouldn't have given that time another thought until I noticed it again tonight.
I don't know if this is the cause, but it could be perioral cyanosis, which is normal and not cause for concern. It is just the appearance of the veins which makes the area around the lips appear blue. Usually, if the child is actually having difficulty breathing the lips, mucous membranes and nail beds appear blue.
That being said, if you really feel your child is not breathing well, then you should bring him to the ER.
That's awful that she reacted that way! Your pedi should not make you feel bad about having concerns as a parent. When you find a new pedi I would call this woman and tell her exactly why your leaving that practice!
