  • torn is about the only way i can put it .. my mom while she didn't have an elective c-section, she had an elective induction at 38/39 wks so she could attend my dad's grad school graduation that was scheduled ON her due date. she didn't want to tempt fate and go into labor there NOR did she want my dad to miss his own graduation b/c she was in labor. all the tests came back that the baby was ok and they scheduled the induction. my sister was a week old at my dad's graduation.

i can see why women would do this, after all, my own mom did and we know why and given the situation all of us BUT my sister (the elective induction) agree w/ what mom did.  her 1st, me, came 10 days early and the other 2 after were both late so it's not like this was the start of a routine thing.

  • From a practical standpoint, it makes sense to limit elective c-sections due to the cost differential to hospitals and insurance companies.

From a personal standpoint, I do not understand why anyone would want their child to be born early unless it was medically necessary.  Babies are not convenient, and neither is giving birth.  I have a major problem with the mindset that a baby should be born because the parents/doc/whomever have a schedule to keep.

Yes, the end of pregnancy is uncomfortable.  Did I do a fair amount of b!tching and moaning the 11 days I went past my EDD?  Definitely.  However, my discomfort was worth my child's health and I would not be wiling to take any risks with that.

Edited to clarify:  It is definitely the EARLY part that gets to me.

  • So my only beef is the early part - I fully believe that if you want to choose c-section you should be allowed to and it should be respected, just like if you want a home water birth, you should be allowed to and it should be respected. Control over our bodies means exactly that - being able to own your birth plan (emergencies aside, obviously) in a way that is empowering and able to let you bond with your child the best way you feel you'll be able to.

The mom of twins who had a c-section at 37 weeks - that's full term for twins, to the best of my knowledge, so whatever. I can imagine being FINISHED being pregnant at that point.

But for a singleton - it's too early. My c-section wasn't elective (it's my only option ever and ever and ever) and my Dr said that unless I go into labor naturally earlier, there was no way she was scheduling it before 39 weeks.

And if you've gone over 40 weeks and you want to induce, then do it.

But to feel like you should be able to do it *whenever*...that's just dangerous and not ok.

  • its the EARLY part that gets me too ... planned ok - but still I think nature should be allowed to take its course so long as that is the healthiest and best way for the mom and baby

This is true. I could not imagine making it to 40 weeks with twins. I also think it would be dangerous depending on many individual factors. I was 38 weeks when I had the twins and also a repeat c-section so I wasn't going to try for vaginal delivery at all.

I personally did not know a woman with NO risk factors could walk into a hospital and say she wanted to go early at 37 weeks just because she felt like it. Maybe the medical reasons are a lot more relaxed and that is why woman have medical c-sections more often.

  • I do think it is interesting that the woman who gave an opinion about getting an elective c-section had an emergency c-section.  Plus twins and singletons are different ballgames.

  • I already thought elective was banned and that Docs just made up reasons to get around it.  I had a planned C section with my first due to medical issues that A. precluded me from delivering without an epi and B. required an anthesesiologist to be present the entire time medication was being administered to me.  When I checked in and the nurse said something about oh baby must be breech, when I replied no she went a little postal on me about why are you having a section then?  At that point it was all I could do to keep my cool.

As far as the women should be able to choose when they have a baby thing.  I'm not a believer.  I think that our bodies know exactly what needs to happen and pushing that without concrete medical reasoning is just an unnecessary risk for baby.  So I guess I'd be on the support the ban side.
