Trouble TTC

How long?

I have just started the process of getting tested since my DH and I have reached the one year mark. I booked an appointment with my GP so that I could get a referal to a gynacologist, he didn't want to refer me to a fertility clinic yet, and have to wait two weeks to hear back about the referal. This seems like it is going to be a long process. How long approximately did it take for everyone to get testing done and diagnosed before moving on to treatment options?

Re: How long?

  • If it's been a year, you need a specialist. Your GP is not an expert in fertility, and many GP's and even gynecologists have an aversion for some reason to RE's. My own GYN thinks RE's just "try something til it works"

Basically, don't waste your time with your GP or your GYN. Get to an RE.

ETA: I didn't answer your original ?. I got in with the RE within 2 weeks and had all testing complete within that month (the testing is based upon your cycle, so it depends on where you are in your cycle when you start testing).

  • I just don't know :S I live in Canada so I don't know if that makes a difference but I can't get a GYN or RE without a referral from my GP, I checked :(

My GP indicated that the GYN would run the first lot of tests and the SA for my DH and then based on the results would either refer me to an RE or the GYN would treat me.

  • I see. That makes sense. But I would push as hard as you can for your GP to let you see an RE. My GYN handed me an Rx for Clomid with six months of refills and told me to call him if I took them all six months and didn't get pregnant. GYN's handling infertility is dangerous in my opinion. Luckily I was smart enough not to take the Clomid and to get in with an RE.

  • I started testing with my OB/GYN in March and called to make an appt with my RE....for JULY.  Thankfully I was able to get an appt for June and all testing/surgery was done by August.  So....5 months.  However, I also have to remember that 3 months of that was waiting to see the RE.

  • I started seeing a OBGYN for fertility issues before I got into an RE and wish I hadn't wasted my time. Apparently they didn't even read my u/s right. Ugh. Can you get a referral to an OB and then get the testing out of the way with that doc and try to get a referral to an RE in the meantime. That way you wouldn't miss out on a cycle for testing. I think it took me about a month of tests with my OB in order to diagnose and start treatment, so you have some time to work on getting that RE referral. Maybe with a diagnosis, your GP will be more likely to get you to the specialist. Good luck!

  • Thankfully I didn't need a referral to go to the RE, however when I called the RE in May, the first opening they had for new patients was in October.  So I did a bunch of the initial testing with my OBGYN just to get things moving.  I had my HSG, 7 DPO P4, and my CD3 blood work all done through my OBGYN and we had DH go ahead and do his SA through his urologist.

It worked out well for us because the day of our RE appointment turned out to be CD3 for me.  So we did our baseline u/s and a ton of blood work that day and I was put on Clomid and was able to have my first IUI 12 days after my first appointment with the RE.
