Trouble TTC

Can weight affect SA?

First I apologize, and don't want to offend anyone dealing with MFI.  My husband has normal count.  But for my last 3 IUI's, he has dropped from 60m to 20m.  He has also gained about 20 lbs in this time.  Could these be related?

Re: Can weight affect SA?

  • I doubt 20 lbs would do it. Interestingly enough sometimes numbers dip after warm weather months though. That could be it. Luckily you're still in a good range though!

  • I think I remember reading something once pertaining to men's weight (more to do with muscle mass) and SA's. I think it has to do with when some men exercise more they produce more testosterone and therefore SA's can improve. However this is not true for all men and some can never work out and have awesome T numbers/SA results and some who are in perfect health and work out all the time can have less than ideal T numbers/SA results.

  • Increased body fat can cause lower testosterone. Testosterone is converted in fat tissue to estrogen, so men with higher fat mass have can have lower testosterone levels. It would take some time for that to have an effect on sperm count though, I would think. And since 20 mil is still well in the normal range, I'm guessing it was just random variation and probably didn't have much to do with the weight gain.

  • Thanks for the advice. I know we're blessed that his counts are normal, It was just so high the first time, and so much lower the next 3 times.  I am worried about that trend continuing, and trying to nip it in the bud if I can.  Hopefully his travel schedule will slow down some and he'll be able to get back to working out more regularly.  Of course that won't happen until next year.  Thanks again!
