Day Care

I posted awhile ago asking if anyone knew of good day care in the North Springfield area, and want to say thanks to the poster who sent me some recommendations.

I visited the woman who I thought would be perfect, and I just didn't have great feelings about her. I know she comes highly recommended, but I didn't like that she was so...old. (I feel like an @ss saying that). I worry that she wouldn't be able to keep up with the kids she has plus my infant.

I contacted another woman in my neighborhood and I felt like we hit it off on the phone. I went to visit her today and really liked her, so I think I'm going with her. She's been doing home daycare for 10 years, has a great set up and tends to keep kids for a long time. Even when they stop going to her so they can go to preschool, they come back for after school care when they get to Kindergarten. I also like that my LO will be the only infant (for now). He'll get lots of good one-on-one attention.  She takes the kids on outings to the park, rec centers and library and does lots of arts and crafts and reads with them. Pets may turn some people off, but I was glad to see that she had a dog who's very sweet and good with kids.

I realize this may read like I'm conviincing myself that the second DCP is the way to go, and maybe I am. This is a huge decision for me.

What criteria did you use when you looked for a DCP?

Re: Day Care

  • We knew from the beginning that a center based daycare would fit us best, and we visited a few.  We had picked one that was convenient and thought we were set to go.  DS ended up being a preemie and I was having all kinds of second thoughts about going back to work at all, let alone sending him to daycare.  I kept putting off calling the daycare about starting and one day I was out running errands and drove by a brand new center.  When I got home I did some research on the chain it is part of and scheduled a tour.  The moment I walked in, it just felt RIGHT.  I can't pinpoint what, if anything, was the deciding factor, but DS has been there since he was 12 weeks old.  And we're all still very happy with the decision.

  • We've only looked at day care centers and I agree with PP-- go with your gut.  We visited some that friends recommended/said they loved, so we were shocked when we didn't like them!  There were just some 'things' that bothered us (and it would bother me if the provider was old, just sayin'...).  To each their own. Sounds like you're happy with the second one, go for it!

This was definitely the most important thing for me.  Go with your gut feeling about who you think will take care of your child the best and you probably won't regret it.

  • I agree to go with your gut feeling. When you walk out the door, you want to have confidence in the providers you've chosen. GL!

  • Sounds like you have no hesitations about the second one - so that's great!

If you went to the two ladies I recommended I think I know who you went with - my neighbor uses her and has had great experiences.  My DCP is the "old" one - lol - we actually think it's a plus that she is "grandmotherly" and have had great experiences with her.

You can't go wrong in NoVA there are so many in-home options - I really believe there is someone for everyone.

    Yay for finding someone!!!  Smile

Wife, Musician, Fed, WW-er, and Mom of three little kids - not necessarily in that order.
  • Thanks everyone. :) I feel better about my decision now.
