High-Risk Pregnancy

Preeclampsia- Just diagnosed

Hello! I was just diagnosed with mild preeclampsia and have my specialty appointment tomorrow. My blood pressure is okay 128/93, its my protein that's the issue (1264). I am not scared exactly, but feeling very unsure about what I should be doing, or what's going to happen.

My regular doctor didn't really have any reccomendations regarding bed rest beyond taking it easy until I see the specialist tomorrow. I also purchase a bp cuff, and am taking it twice a day to help monitor. Anyone else going through this? Or (unfortunatley) have experience with this? I will do what I am told by my doctor, of course, but don't know anyone personally who has done this before.

 Thanks for any help!

Re: Preeclampsia- Just diagnosed

  • Hello -

I went to the doctor last week and my bp jumped from 90/62 to 126/62 and had protein in my urine so i just went to the doctor yesterday (30 weeks) and my doctor said that while i don't have preeclampsia yet I am very likely to get it -  this time my bp was 130/78 and then before i left 118/78 there was no protein but i have to do a 24 hr test tomorrow to make sure. Until next week he didn't exactly put me on bed rest but he restricted me to home and work (i'm cheating and going to a friend's house this weekend but i figure that's just a different couch to lounge on!)

Did your mother or mother-in-law have it when they were pregnant? My doctor said that while they really don't know what causes it or how to prevent it, it seems to run in the family (my mom and sister had it). On the downside he also said that if it happens it happens there isn't anything i can do to prevent it but for the sake of my health to take it easy until we find out more.

Sorry I'm not much help! i hope everything turns out ok for you and your baby!

  • My mom had a very mild case with my oldest brother, and didn't require treatment or rest. Just constant monitoring. I don't know about my XMIL, and am not willing to ask her :)

The worst part is the talking about if I deliever prior to 34 weeks, that I will have to be at a certain hospital because it has a level 4 children's hospital, and that I need to be ready to deliver in the next few weeks, as this could progress quickly. My XH and I got divorced about two weeks ago as he decided not to be married when I was 10 weeks along. It's just another blow.

I am usually very upbeat, and will get back there, but man, I could really use a break here. Okay! Pity party over! I will just follow their directions and try to stay as stress free as possible!

  • How far along are you?

  • 30 weeks, three days. Sorry, that was probably good information to have!
  • I agree, the talk of inducing so early is scary - how far along are you? Depending on how severe your case hopefully they will keep you on bed rest until you reach 37 weeks (that's what my doctor kept saying) Do you know if it's a boy or girl?

I don't blame you for the pity party! Sometimes they are just downright necessary!!! Staying stress free is key! Good luck and hopefully your visit to the specialist comes out with a good diagnosis!!

  • I have been on hospital bed rest since 23 weeks and 4 days pre-e is not my only issue, but it is a pretty major one. I have had some really high blood pressures. My 24 hour protein has never been as high as your was. I know right now that my doctors are trying to manage my health and the babies health. My pre-e symptoms have a tendency to come on really quickly and I show not of the typical physical symptoms. I hope that your doctor will be able to come up with a plan to get you farther along. I know from listening to what my doctors have said that a lot of patients that the symptoms come on very quickly and they are unable to manage them. Good luck with your appointment. If you need someone to talk to I am around.

  • That's what I understood, once it starts this fast, it typically keeps going this fast. I also don't have the swelling or the physical symptoms.

I will be around for sure tomorrow after my appointment. I am sorry you are going through this, but am glad there is someone who gets it. Thank you. I appreciate everyone's support, a lot.

  • My blood pressure started going up once I hit 28 weeks and I started swelling really bad (gained 5lb in 2 days, and then went up a total of almost 20 pounds in 3 weeks, all swelling).  I had several urine tests and high blood pressure readings at doctors appointments 2x/week and had one 24 hour urine test, which all turned back with no protein in my urine.

Then, at my appt. at 30w6d the doctor found a slight amount of protein, then put me on modified bed rest and another 24 hour urine test....well, that night I got horribly sick (burning pain in my lungs/chest (not heartburn), my shoulder blades felt like they wanted to rip out of my back, and my stomach started hurting and was tender to the touch.  We called the doctor, who told us to go to L&D, when we got to the hospital my blood pressure was 190/125, they found more protein in my urine and I was officially diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia.  The doctor immediately gave me the first of two steroid shots (to help develop the baby's lungs) and told my husband and I that I would not be leaving the hospital until I had my baby and that I would be delivering within 48 hours, IF i made it that long.  Well, luckily, I got through the 48 hours (time to get the 2 steroid shots to help the baby's lungs develop), then went downhill in the evening at 31w1d and had my baby via c-section at 31w2d on October 21st.

My daughter is in the NICU now and is doing really well, and after I gave birth I immediately felt much better, and now, almost 4 weeks pp, my blood pressure is back down to normal.

If you start to feel sick at all, don't hesitate to call your doctor - you don't want to wind up with a stroke or seizure because you didn't take the threat of pre-eclampsia seriously.
