Hello Purple Crying

So I dunno if this happens in the US or even outside ONtario but when you have a baby here you get a call from a public health nurse.  This time around they asked me if I was aware of something called Purple Crying.  WTF is that?  Well it's basically when your baby cries for no reason,  not colic, not dirty, not hungry, not tired, just crying.  Well guess what we have going on right now.  Man is DS pissed.   Anyone have earplugs?  I don't remember DD doing this but she must have.  It's lung exercise apparently.  DD is walking around covering her ears and saying "Gamie Cry mommy! Loud!"  DH better get home soon.  I think I need to go for a walk or something.

Re: Hello Purple Crying

  • Where I delivered you had to watch a video about purple crying before leaving the hospital. It basically was about not shaking your baby when the cry for no reason. Dear god, we need a video to tell some people that?

  • I have never heard of this. Isn't that called just being a baby?
  • It's not just being a baby.  DS does it and when he does, you think you're going to lose your mind because you do everything you can and he's still not happy.  It helps to know that it ends eventually though.

hmmmm....but that is what Colic is.  it's not a stomach issue like so many people think.  it's overstimulation and the babies nervous system overreacting due to not being acclimated w/ their environment yet.  there is no cure.  crap like Colic calm doesn't work, only time.  that is why it happens between 2-12wks.  once they "wake up"at 2wks it starts and then it ends when their brains mature at 12wks.   i've never heard of Purple crying. sounds like someone is trying to just rename what Colic is.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I mean babies cry for no reason all the time, and it's horrible when you can't figure out what's wrong. It's just what babies do. If it's excessive then it's colic.

  • last night, our baby just cried and cried for no reason.  My H said "this is when people give in to shaking the baby" - but I argued "why would you shake the baby? they will just cry even more" (I am hoping people dont shake the baby with the intention of killing it)

We were kind of laughing about it, but we also said that there is a reason babies are so cute or you may lose your patience.

We had to watch the video and sign papers stating we understood why you don't shake a baby.
