Breastfeeding

6-wks and only pumping 2oz total in one session

I am starting to feel a little discouraged.  I did start at 0.5 oz total and now at 2oz, but I know of people producing 2oz per breast around or before 6wks.  I am mostly nursing (supplement formula once or twice a day) my baby and pump once when he takes his nap from 2-4:30pm.  Sometimes I get 2oz and maximum 2.5oz.  Is there any hope that my supply will still increase?  I started taking fenugreek pills and I drink a lot of water.  TIA

Re: 6-wks and only pumping 2oz total in one session

  • I am 7 weeks pp and I only pump 2.5-3 total per session. LO might be getting more than that though. I weighed LO before feeding and after and she had sucked out 5oz.

I have a low supply, but my girl gains like crazy. I am super jealous of these ladies that can pump out 30 ounces in a day, not me though, I can barely get by. But getting by is what matters. I am finally EBF all day, then pumping once for a freezer stash (measly 3oz, but whatev)

  • I don't have any suggestions but want to let you know you are not alone...I'm in the exact same boat! The most I have EVER gotten is 4oz total after an overnight pump.. I'm jealous of the ladies who pump large quantities and have a freezer stash! I actually gave up on pumping because my nipples were hurting and I was getting too frustrated. We nurse most of the day and supplement with formula a couple of times a day when he seems still hungry after a nursing session! Good luck... I hope things get better for both of us.. are you eating oatmeal too? That's one things I try to do daily... I don't know if it really helps but I'm trying everything! :)

  • I totally understand. I'm in the same boat. Sometimes I'm lucky to get 1 ounce. But you're totally normal. It didn't help my stress level as I was trying to build a stash (and honestly just had to start supplementing cause the pumping output just isn't enough for the time I'm at work and he's at daycare), but "Most moms who are nursing full-time are able to pump around 1/2 to 2 ounces total (for both breasts) per pumping session."

    just keep at it!

  • I am girls, I am glad that I am not the only one.  I will keep doing the best that I can do. hopefully things will improve!

  • My DD is 6 weeks today and I get 1.5 ozs. per pumping session after trying More Milk Plus, oatmeal, water, breast compressions.  I got a prescription today for Reglan so we'll see!!  Good luck to us all!!

  • That is a completely normal amount to get in one session.  I only rarely got more than that. If you are going back to work and replacing nursing with more pumping you will get more. Until then, just keep doing what you are doing.

  • My guess is that once your LO isn't nursing ATC you'll be getting a lot more from pumping. I noticed a pretty quick drop in what I got pumping as soon as I went from EP to BF my preemie. If your baby is gaining weight and you're not giving any or much formula every day, then your supply is actually fine. You may want to focus on trying to have as many let downs as possible when you pump- look at your LO or a pic, relax, play with the speed/suction of the pump, and maybe even try to cover up and not look at the amts during. These things have all helped me in the past- GL!

  • That actually sounds normal to me. I went back to work at 6 wks. w/both kids. While on mat leave, your pumping output is about what mine was: there just isn't much time between feedings, unlike when I pump at work....that's when I could get 20-28 oz. a day on occasion. But not at home, between feedings.

If you're trying to build a stash, you might try adding in a pumping session first thing in the AM, or if that's not possible, before you go to bed. Just keep getting baby to the breast as much as you can (will help supply as well) and don't get discouraged: as long as he's gaining well and you and baby are happy, that's what matters most.

  • It will come around.  I was pumping about that at that time and it increased as LO started to eat more.

Be careful of supplementing-just make sure you pump if you give a bottle so your body gets the message that baby is still hungry.  If you aren't pumping when you give formula, your body doesn't know that LO requires more food and will regulate itself to what it is currently producing.

Make sure you eat enough, too! BFing requires about 500 extra calories each day! Life Cereal, Oatmeal and Nature Valley Granola Bars seemed to help me.

  • That's about the same amount I was getting at 6 wks.  Now that my LO is 7 months (ahhhh!) I pump around 6 oz at a time.  The best advice I have, is to make sure you pump when you supplement with formula.  Otherwise you are telling your body to make less milk.  Also, make sure you have the correct size flange on your breastpump.  When I changed to a smaller size I started getting 2 oz more per sessions, and my nipples stopped hurting.  Remember, your baby's stomach grows as they get older and people pumping bigger totals probably have older babies.
