Six Weeks and Miserable

Well, "miserable" may be a tad dramatic.

I am going through all of the early pregnancy symptoms, and constipation is definitely the worst of them all. I've been taking prenatal vitamins since I found out (two weeks ago), and I decided to stop taking them (today was my first day without one) until my first doctor's appointment on the 28th. My constipation will not seem to go away, and ALWAYS returns. It's been seriously curbing my appetite, and I haven't been wanting to eat at all. I feel horrible for feeling this way because I KNOW that I need to eat to nourish my child, but it's so hard because my body feels horrible and I am so uncomfortable.

Do y'all (sorry, I'm a Texan) suggest anything for this?

  • That was pretty much my only pregnancy symptom (aside from breast growth) and it went away on its own after a couple of weeks.  I wouldn't stop taking your prenatals - they actually recommend you take them for a while before getting pregnant.

  • Congrats!

My advice to you is to just have patience with yiour body. The first trimester is the most difficult to get thru. For me, I litterally had to LEARN to like food all over again because the morning (or ALL DAY SICKNESS) would not allow me to enjoy food, or even water for that matter.

Don't worry, you will be past this in a few weeks. Once you start to eat normal again, you won't stop for a while ;)

    Good luck with everything!

  • I wouldn't stop taking prenatals at this point, but maybe you could switch to an iron free prenatal. It's the iron that tends to cause constipation. If you do stop the prenatals, you should probably take at least a folic acid supplement, because it is so important in early pregnancy.

I had this problem right after LO was born, too. Drinking lots of water really helps. I also started taking a fiber supplement (I take a gummy one, but you could also try tablets or one of the mix in powders like Metamucil).

    Good luck!

  • I mean, I'm definitely going to continue taking prenatals - I'm currently in search of one that doesn't have so much iron. It's just HARD to deal with. I constantly feel like my body hates me, and the only thing that's keeping me going is the fact that I know I have a growing baby to take care of.

     Thanks, guys!

Get used to it!  Stick out tongue  I had a love/hate relationship with my body for a year.  It is amazing what your body can/will do to nourish your baby during the next 9 months, then through birth, and then breastfeeding.  When you get angry at not having control over your body, keep remembering all the amazing things it is doing.

And for constipation - water, water, water!!  Excercise helped me too.  Also try to eat as much fruit (fresh and/or dried) as you can stomach. If it is still bad, I've heard ladies recommend prune juice.

  • Don't stop taking the prenatals. The folic acid in them is essential for the baby's CNS development and there can be some serious risks to the baby if he/she doesn't get the proper nutrition. They also are high in the B Vitamins which will give you more energy, and IRON - the source of your constipation. It's what makes you both constipated as well as your poop black and tarry.

I remember that the constipation was the worst for me, too. Increase your fiber & water intake considerably. 100% Natural apple juice is great, and exercise is a must - walking helps with parastalysis which keeps everything moving. You can change up your diet by reducing your caffeine intake (if you drink coffee or sodas), and reducing cheese consumption.

  • My nausea meds are the reason i am in the same boat.  I find if i eat a serving of furit before meals, and espcially before bed and right when I wake up i have an easier time.
  • I'm right there with ya! I've been eating a lot of leafy green veggies and that has helped a little bit, as well as TONS of water and healthy fats to keep everything "lubed up" down there, but I'm still struggling.

  • Vitafusion prenatal Gummies don't have iron. They're delicious and never upset my stomach.
