im 37 wks today. my ob keeps hounding me to get a flu shot? im not sure if it is safe? CDC/FDA claim it is safe but i dont trust them. any thoughts on if it is safe/necessary at this stage?
I got mine, my Dr. said it was a good decision....also got advice from a maternal fetal specialist who scan me and she suggested it was also a good idea, esp at this time of year. The baby will come out with the same immunity for 6 mo after birth. I feel it is safe.
I got mine at the first available opportunity, then again I follow CDC recommendations. Baby cannot get a flu vaccine for this flu season (until they are 6 months of age), and therefore would be protected by YOUR immunity to the flu from the vaccine that you are highly recommended to get.
I got mine for the reasons listed above with both pregnancies and I'm all set to have my annual flu shot next week at my doc. appt. The last thing you want is to watch your child struggle with the flu when they're that teeny tiny. My son got RSV - not the flu but still very serious and he was hospitalized when he was just 2 weeks old. I will do anything and everything in my power to make sure my kids are safe and healthy.
I trust the CDC. I'm a pediatric nurse practitioner and have seen infants with the flu- if you can do anything to prevent that, you probably should It may not prevent every case, but it's worth a shot (ha, ha) to me.

Not related to this post, or your comment - but i LOVE your pic of your pit-puppy. I'm pretty sure your pup and my pup are from the same dang parents. Same coloring, same expression...and definitely same behavior!!
If you don't trust your OB or the CDC, I don't know why you would trust
us. But if you want the opinion of someone who doesn't have a medical degree and hasn't taken a lab science class since high school, yes, it is safe
during pregnancy, and it is a lot safer for you and your baby than
getting the flu.

Here's the full picture, in case you have options:
The flu shot is general safe for pregnant women. There is some concern about the mercury preservative, but many preservative-free varieties are available (any that is individually packaged will be preservative-free). This includes the needle-free shot (micro-needles) because these are always delivered individually packaged. You cannot get FluMist because it's a live virus and they have not yet determined its effects on pregnant women and fetus.

So you don't trust the CDC/FDA but you do trust a bunch of internet strangers on the bump? You're going to make a great mom! Do the make tinfoil hats in newborn sizes?
I had one at my OB's office and I feel that it is safe. She had the preservative free kind so I felt comfortable taking it. My baby is coming during flu season and I want him to have some immunity so he doesn't get sick. It's a personal decision so go with whatever your gut feels.

I got mine back in September at my OB's office during one of my prenatal appointments. Shots are highly recommended for pregnant women during flu season. If they weren't safe, your doctor wouldn't bug you to get one.

Make your own decision.
This! As long as you get the shot not the nasal mist you are fine. The nasal mist is live virus and is harmful to baby, but the shot is not and will give your baby immunity during the winter months since LO can't get their own shot.
I understand not completely trusting the CDC/FDA. Even though they generally have good recommendations, they've also made lots of mistakes in the past concerning vaccinations and medications. So, I suggest you do what I did and do your own research.
I found that the amount of preservatives in the shot are minuscule, especially compared to the amounts you can find in the prepackaged foods and beverages we consume every day. Also, the risks of you getting the flu from the shot are extremely small, and worth it compared to the benefits of immunity you'll pass on to your baby for the remainder of the flu season.
But don't take my word for it, look it up yourself. It's important you make a properly informed decision.
I got mine at 36 weeks and never had one before. I teach so I have a very high immunity to the flu. However, my doctor says it protects the baby for 6 months.
I just went to CVS and got a preservative (mostly) free shot. Insurance covered it - its no big deal. I rather not have our baby get sick because of me.
thanks for the comments and even the snarky ones. to be clear i love my ob. i do trust her but i think i have the right to question if it is a good idea. after reading numerous articles on vaccines and other things that we shouldnt do while pregnant made me question the flu shot. there are a lot of mix msgs out there. and for the record, the cdc has gotten things wrong in the past!
my initial thought on posting was to get some insight from woman who are pregnant and have to make the same decisions i m going to have to make. strangers or not, it is nice hear other expecting mother's thoughts.

This is why I got one.
Me too, though I don't mind the snark.
If you don't trust your OB, the CDC or FDA who can you trust during pregnancy? Besides a few strangers on a preggo message board?
