Urgent feedback needed

Ok, maybe that subject line makes it sound a tad too serious, but it is urgent. Please give me your opinion if you can.

J has super outgrown his Graco snugride 35. After much discussion/research, we bought the Safety 1st Alpha Elite 65 because it is reportedly a good seat and it was the smallest-looking one. We have a 2002 Honda Civic, so we were size-conscious. Anyway, K tried to install it and couldn't make it work. We made an appointment with Boston EMS so they would do it, and it turns out the seat doesn't fit in the car in the rear-facing position. Actually, after looking at the seat in the rear-facing position, we realized J would have had to have his legs crossed in the seat in order to fit. I know the safety guidelines just changed, and they now recommend that kids be rear-facing until they're two. The issue for us is we have a kid who fluctuates between the 97th and the 100th percentile for height - he's now 34 inches tall, and he's not quite 14 months old (two more days!).

On to the question: can those of you with tall babies/small cars share your car seat experience? The car seat installer was total gloom-and-doom about having him forward-facing even though our pediatrician had said it would be ok if that's the only thing that works. Thoughts, please?

Thanks!

Re: Urgent feedback needed

  • I dont have experience w/ them (since we both drive large vehicles), but i've heard really good things about sunshine radian carseats for both small cars and extended rear-facing.
  • Loading the player...
  • No real recs, since we only have experience with Britax Marathons (which is what we have in our van), but I just wanted to note that kids often have to cross their legs to stay RF.

  • My nephews are super tall and they just cross their legs kinda indian style.  This was a topic on a nother board dont remmber what one but pretty much everyone agreed that rear is best and just have kids fold their legs or cross or whathave you.  A broken leg is better than a headless child - sorry for the graphicness but I worked at a Coroners Bureau in Oakland and I can t ell you stories ...

Actually I think  the car seat thread was in this forum ... just go back like 3 weeks.

  • Just to reiterate what the others have said.. better safe rear facing even with crossed legs. Babies are so flexible, it doesn't bother them like it woudl us. You can google - Best rear facing for Honda civic and things come up from other boards (I did this when trying to find a seat for our cruiser). It sounds like the Radian is a good choice for rear facing and small spaces. Good luck!!!

  • Crossed legs when rear facing is totally normal.

  • No help with the size but I agree with pp on extending rfing.  I suggest that you go to magic beans (there is one in coolidge corner and another in wellesley).  I read on their blog a while ago that they have cert. carseat people at the stores now and they also sell the car seats.  They would know best and will let you pop the seats in to see how they fit.  E is still rf at almost 2.5.

  • Thanks, everyone, especially for the reassurance that being cross-legged is fine. Our only close friend with a little kid has a three-year-old peanut who's exactly James' size, so she was never cross-legged when rear-facing. As I was searching through the websites suggested by 2brides (thanks!), I came across the exact problem, I think, with the Safety 1st in our car, and K is out there now trying to install it correctly. Hopefully that will work! Otherwise, we'll go for the Radian - it's suggested multiple times for 2002 Civics.

    Thanks again!
