how are you cleaning?

I'm seriously considering getting a maid everyother week. I really don't want to part with the cash though. But anytime I try to clean the smells make me soooooooooooooooooooo sick!

What are all of you doing to deal with this? Any ideas so I don't have to spend the money?

Re: how are you cleaning?

  • I can't afford a maid, so I'm just sucking it up as best I can and DH is doing the stuff I absolutely can't.

  • My house looks like a war zone right now. DH vacuumed but that's about it! I just don't care right now.

As soon as I feel better (or I will have him do it) I will get my steamer out. I am trying to avoid cleaning products as much as possible.

  • Get to it when you feel like you can, and for those things that the smell still bothers you, get DH to help out.  We share tasks, but I've given him sole responsibility of toliet bowl cleaning!  I'm finding my DH is actually requesting to help cleaning, he'll see me ready to vacuum and come over and take it away and vacuum! it's really great!
  • DH is doing a lot of the housework and he is actually being really great about it.

We are going to be doing some construction on the house within the next few months and I think when that is all done we are going to get a maid to come every other week.  We had someone come once right before our wedding and she was very reasonably priced and I feel like it will be SO worth it.  Even before pregnancy, with my work hours, I would always just be too tired during the week and I would want to enjoy my weekends.  I can't even imagine having to do it with the baby AND work.

  • i'm doing dishes and laundry but thats about it. the h is doing the rest or its just not getting done. which is fine by me. i'm not a super clean freak.
  • H and I have always split the cleaning.  We've just rearranged it a little so he does more of the things I can't and I do more of the things I can.  Easy peasy lemon squeezey.
  • I still havent gotten any MS or nausea but if you cant stand the smell of the cleaning stuff what you can do, use shark steamer and vacuum cleaner. I have Shark steamer in my house and I love it, it cleans really good and no chemicals. For bathroom and vanity I use clorox spray, so I just leave them for an hour and rinse them off, works great with scums and traces of dirt.

I use to have maid once a month too, but the price has gone up ever since the last time I use them. Cant afford them anymore. Hope this help.

  • DH and I have always split the cleaning duties--it's not just my house after all :)  When I was pregnant with DD, he started doing the bathrooms since he didn't want me playing with the chemicals.  It stuck and has been his job ever since.  Same with the grocery shopping.  I couldn't walk into a grocery store early on--the smells got to me, so he took over.  Let's just say, I haven't taken it back and don't plan to :)

    Get your husband to help!

  • Now would be a good time to switch to non-toxic cleaners if the smell is getting to you. I use either Shaklee, 7th Generation or Method products. They either don't smell at all, or Method stuff smells AMAZING. After DS was born I switched so he wouldn't be ingesting all of the gross cleaner chemicals.

  • My hub is totally willing and already does the many house chores, and grocery shopping. But it's so busy at his work right now he's putting in 30-40+ hours of overtime a week, and I'd like him to have some down time.

I can do the daily stuff (vaccuming, dishes, I even have a shark steam mop so floors I can do). But with the hilodays coming up and the "deep cleaning" that I cant do it just seems best.

  • If you do a little research you'll find that vinegar and hydrogen peroxide will disinfect just about anything.  Hydrogen peroxide will take mold right off your shower walls, etc. and it is odorless.  You could at least use that just to clean up a little every other day or so.

I was going to say this and vinegar and baking soda does work really well with stuff!

  • I have the most brag worthy husband ever he does pretty much all of the house work right now which is great because I am normally in charge of the house work as I'm a stay at home. I do clean the kitchen and I use an organic cleaner from the babyganics line. Its great its organic so I dont need to worry about chemicals and it has a lavender scent which is the best smell for my morning sickness. You can also ask a local church for help I have volunteered to assist pregnant women cleaning their home through church before.

  • My DH does not clean. No amount of fighting, pleading or tears will change this. During my last first tri I was on limited activity and could not keep up with it. We hired a cleaning service for every other week. I cannot part with them now. I vaccuum & sweep every day because we have a shedding dog and a crawling infant. I run the dishwasher every other day & do laundry every 3rd day.

The cleaning company isn't that expensive and when the trade off was my marriage or a nasty house last year it was worth the expense for us.

  • My DH is handling the cleaning right now.  I don't have the energy and usually cannot stand the dirty or clean smells.

  • Thanks girls! I've been hesitant to try organic and I didn't even know about the hydogenperoxide. Haven't wanted to spend the money on it and then have it not do the job.   But sounds like they work! YAYAYAYAY! so I think before I spend on a cleaning service I'll grab some of the items you girls suggested and make a go of it that way! Thanks!

  • I only use organic stuff (babyganics and method) and have a shark steam mop. I've been using it for years. The smell of bleach has always made me sick and I've never liked the idea of smelling chemicals. I feel much better knowing that the fumes aren't hurting me or my family.
