I really, really, REALLY cannot stand Twilight. I love the fantasy and supernatural genre, I even enjoy the vampire subgenre, but I cannot stand Twilight. Sparkling stalker pseudo-vampires are just not my thing. Now, I have friends who enjoy it, though they aren't obnoxious with it. I don't go around calling the fans names. I've never read the books and only watched the first movie (because a friend had rented it, and we ended up MST3K'ing the movie). Anytime I see the preview or see it used as a background movie in a commercial I roll my eyes.
I am SO ready for this craze to be over!
Re: NBR - Does anyone else dispise Twilight?
I don't get it either. I have read the books and they are ok... if I keep in mind the whole time they were probably written for the tween age range. If I try to read them as an adult book they piss me off. Honestly I started reading the first on my vacation this summer and got so annoyed 9 pages in I put the book down to read the Stephen King I had with me instead. I only tried to read it again because I was out of books and the store was closed.
As for the movies I've seen the first and found it dull and not very good. Yet I have friends who LOVE the books and the movies and am now suffering through the count down to the movie (again) on FB. I can't wait for it to be over.
Harry Potter came out in 1997. I was still at an age to like juvenile fiction. Twilight came out in 2005. I was too old to care about pointless drama and lazy enough that if I wanted a soap opera, I would have turned on the tv, not picked up a book. lol. Plus, I've never been much of a girly girl. Although Harry Potter does have some sexual tension/dating drama, it's not the whole point of the story. I've never been one to want to read anything centered on romance. (Even as an English major I completely avoided authors like Jane Eyre...)
My co-worker and I both really like Harry Potter (ok I may be a bit crazy for the series) and he read the Twilight books because his sister passed them along to him. He even said not to expect much from them at all and they were no where near the quality of the HP series. The poor guy also get dragged to the movies by his FI and sister... I feel so bad for him.
Weird. I don't know why about an hour ago the name "Debbie Gibson" popped in my head, for NO reason. I don't even remember what I was thinking about. I did a double take when I saw your post! Not a name you hear everyday.

The Sookie Stackhouse books are WAY better. Sex, violence, blood, witches, etc... Give me some Eric the Vampire any day!
Same here!
The target audience is teenage girls. It just happened to catch on other places too.
I love Twilight, but I also know that it's not supposed to be taken seriously.
I don't despise it, but I don't get it either. Same with Harry Potter. All of the hoopla about them all actually amuses me. I have a close friend who is a huge fan of both. At the last Harry Potter movie that came out, she and 2 friends dressed up in Harry Potter attire to see the movie. DH and I laughed a lot over those FB pictures!! She's on her way right now to the Harry Potter theme park in FL.
FWIW - I loved Hunger Games, but you won't see me dressing up as Katniss (sp?)
This. It's just too juvenile for me. Granted I got into HP a couple of years ago, so a bit later than most fans, but the writing is so good, and you really just get sucked into the series. With Twilight, I keep hearing/reading that the writing is mediocre.
Bubblegum Explosion
Cannot stand Twilight. Saw the first movie. That is 2 hours of my life I am never getting back.
Also despise Harry Potter.
Magic/supernatural/fantasy/vampires/etc really do not interest me in the least. I kind of hate how popular it is right now because it can sometimes be hard to find books and movies that don't go into that genre.

This is where I am. I don't hate things because they're popular, and I think doing so is silly. (I LOVE Harry Potter, and its themes are much more worthwhile.)
I work for a bookstore, so when Twilight got popular I gave them a shot. To me, they are *terrible,* but in the most hilarious way. The characters have zero chemistry (seriously, I don't see it), and the dialog is utterly unreal. My husband and I see the movies for comic entertainment. But, knowing that I love plenty of silly things myself, I try not to give Twilight lovers too much grief. Most of the time.
LOVE the Sookie Stackhouse books!
My big issue with Twilight is it's inconsistent in its own mythology. That's just lazy writing. Huge parts of it don't make any sense.
Okay, in my mind HP and Twilight are not comparable. Unless you just dislike scifi/fantasy altogether, I suppose.
HP = good writing, complex story, excellent character development.
Twilight = very obviously "first novel attempt" mediocre writing (like if I tried to sit down and write a book), poorly executed story idea (could have been good I think), and the most anticlimactic ending I have EVER encountered in a tween novel series.
To be fair, the HP films (apart from 3 and both 7s) destroy the books. I can't fully speak for the Twilight films because the first one was so awkward and hard to watch that I didn't bother watching the rest.
Teneniel, I heart you. That's exactly how I feel! I attempted to read the first Twilight book but the writing was so bad I couldn't cope. HP is wonderfully written, but the movies don't capture the 'soul' of the story.
The Sookie Stackhouse books are great reads in the Fluff catagory--while not high literature, they are fun, captivating and drag you into the story. I've been mosly disappointed with the TV show.
I think they both look like crackheads (okay... or at least potheads, lol). Especially a few years ago when they were all over the covers of People and Teen Beat or whatever. They always have their mouths slightly agape and their eyes looked glazed over. KStew's signature look is "droopy mouth, droopy eyes."
When the books first came out and I swore up and down to all of my friends that I would never read them. I totally didn't get the whole vampire love thing and was completely against all of them loving it so much. Well I ran out of books to read and a friend said "just read the first one!" Well needless to say once I read the first one I was hooked. If nothing else it is a really easy to read love story. I'm not into sci-fi and couldn't believe how much I enjoyed the books. But I really think it boils down to the style of writing.
I do go see the movies but I have to say they aren't nearly as good as the books and the acting is somewhat sub-par.
