  • Im having an elective C-section due to medical reasons, and my OB wants to do it when I reach 39 weeks, he won't do it earlier unless I go into labor cause he said there is a lot of good benefits for the baby and mommy. I totally agree with the ban, childbirth is all about the health and safety of the baby not for the convience of the mommy.

  • I think it is insane that a doctor would induce or schedule a c section for 'tax purposes'

The woman at the end of the article didn't like the choice being taken away from her, but I'm sure if lots of women had the choice they may make an irresponsible one and it's our doctors jobs to set rules so we are making the right choices.

She was pregnant with twins though, and from what I understand they are typically delivered earlier due to space issues.

  • I work in a hospital in surgery and I'll go ahead and say it...elective C-sections have gotten way out of control. I'm not surprised hospitals and doctors are cracking down finally.

  • Finally!! I think it's crazy that anyone would choose to have a c-section.  If you need it because of medical reasons then you are not choosing to have one, it's safer and makes sence to me.  BUT for those women who don't feel like waiting or having to go through labor I find to be rediculous (say what you will).  I get pregnany and labor are not fun but to put your body, and baby, through the unnecessary risks is selfish, a c-section is still surgery after all!  I know some hosptials also push women to have them too because they are faster, makes me sad.

I know someone who said if she ever had kids, she wanted a c-section so the baby didn't have a conehead.  Hmm  I think the woman at the end of the article is nuts too.  Having a c-section just so you can be in control is so stupid!  And that's coming from someone who who always has to plan for everything.  I hate being pregnant at the end because I'm so uncomfortable, and I will likely be induced for medical reasons, but I would not CHOOSE a c-section.

  • Opting for a c-section due to medical reasons? One thing. For vanity or convenience? Totally different. I'm glad that these bans are starting to happen. Everyone is uncomfortable towards the end, and I know that I am getting really antsy to meet my DD, but I would never elect a major surgery just to see her two or three weeks sooner.

I do think that there should be more emphasis put on lazy doctor's and lack of education about child birth/pregnancy, not just on the moms. The bump has been great because there really IS a wealth of knowledge here, but I have to wonder how many moms just plain don't know the risks of electing to go so early. If I had no idea and my doctor started telling me the benefits of a c-section I might have considered it too. Fortunately I've put the research in and know better (and picked a better doctor than that), but I can guarantee that not every mom has.

  • I have been sad lately when I think about not being pregnant anymore!!! I am only going on 34 weeks so that feeling may change, but I couldn't imagine forcing my baby out before its not ready! I will let my LO come when it wants to come, and only force it out if its for the baby's health.

  • A girl I work with and I had this dicussion. She used to work for an OB and actually said she wants a c/s because her old boss does a "stripper" scar that is tucked below the belly so you can't see it.

  • Great article!  Yeah, being pregnant sometimes sucks, and as uncomfortable as I'm getting, as excited as I am to meet our little man, and as much as I'd like to not be pregnant anymore, there is no way I wish him to come any earlier than he feels is time.  I have no desire to have a c-section, especially an elective one!  If it becomes medically necessary once I am in labor, that is a whole different story.

At my birthing class over the weekend, I found out that FL and NJ have the highest rates of c-sections in the country.  The nurse teaching the class also said that the US has the highest c-section rate in the world (not surprising).  Being in FL, that scares me a little.  But thankfully I have an OB who does not encourage c-sections unless necessary.

  • Yeah, my DH texted me about it. I ended up having to have an unscheduled one with DS at almost 42 weeks, and now have total placenta previa with DD. My dr is 50 minutes away and I'm on bedrest. We've discussed my due dates, and my dr has been really good about tracking growth and everything. We actually discussed this topic of California (and all over) cracking down on when csections were being done back when I first found out. His hospital will put him on review if he does it less than 39 weeks without a medical reason. I think this is great. Yeah it's uncomfortable, but it is best for the baby. Besides due dates are estimated, what if someone thinks their due date is one day, but the dr is off?

  • Frankly I wouldn't even use a doctor that allowed their patients to choose elective c-sections or induce early for non medical reasons. That tells me their number one priority is not the health/safety of their patients.
