When did you flip to forward facing?

We planned to do extended rear facing until DD outgrew the weight requirement for her seat, but DH injured his back and was unable to get her in and out of his car with the seat rear facing.  (Back issues are better now, thankfully!)

We ended up flipping her to front facing at about 18 months.  She is now 34 pounds and the limit for her chair rear facing is 40 pounds, so I think we are just going to keep her facing front.

Re: When did you flip to forward facing?

  • We are still rear-facing. I understand the back thing because sometimes it is hard getting Ava in her seat!

  • Against my better judgment, flipped her around about 16 mos.  She was literally vomitting in the car.  I HATE HATE HATE that she's forward facing.  However, I also don't think it's safe to ride in a car with a non stop screaming child and one that throws up.  So, FF we went.  :( She's happy as a clam now and no more vomit.

  • We are still RF, but it's not too hard to get him in and out of either of our cars.  He really only rides in our Focus-which is a little more difficult- once a day during the week, we use our SUV on the weekends 99% of the time and that is so much easier to use.  At this point we just put him on the seat of the car and he will climb in the seat himself.

  • We flipped DD around 16 months and it mainly due to the screaming. I couldn't take it any longer. I love that I can interact with her now too.

  • We flipped her around a little before 18 months.  WE couldn't take the screaming.

  • Ada is still rear facing. I am torn about whether to flip her once she turns two or not. The one car seat has a 40lb limit and the other is only 35lbs, which we are fast approaching. If I don't turn her now, I will have to do it in May, so we can fit the infant seat in our cars.

Our carseat has a 35lb limit for rear-facing too. I really need to weigh her to make sure we aren't there yet.

  • DS is still RFing, and happily so.  He'll stay that way for the foreseeable future.  We will have to turn his carseat FFing in our Civic when we install the infant seat (there's no way his convertible seat will fit RFing behind the driver's seat, and the infant carrier has to stay behind the passenger seat b/c it doesn't fit behind the driver's seat either), but we're planning to only put him in that car in emergencies.  The weight limit on one convertible seat is 35 lbs; the other is 40 lbs... we've still got some time for him to stay RFing.

Did I miss an announcement somewhere?  If so, congratulations!!!

  • Both are still RF'ing. DD has ridden FFing in some friends' cars, but happily gets into her seat herself. I think it helps that DS is also rf'ing. We have one seat that goes to 40 lbs rf'ing and the other goes to 35, so I am hoping that I can keep them both RF'ing as long as possible and then flip them at the same time- because I know once I turn DD around, DS is going to want to be FF'ing as well.

  • We flipped Emily around 17 months when we had to move her seat to get all the stuff packed in the car for vacation.

  • We havent yet. It's tough because she is so tall, but she is well enough under the weight limit for RF that I am fine with it. She doesn't know any better about being FF, so she's happy as a clam to be sitting there RF. I anticipate switching her sometime around her 2nd bday.

Thanks. It was talked about on the nest, but I have been fairly quiet about it. I will put up a ticker eventually.

  • I don't remember exactly with DS1, but I think around 18 months. DS2 was right at a year, but like others, I could not take the screaming.

  • I was just thinking about this today. We are still RFing but I can't remember the weight limit. I need to check it out. He is 28 lbs so I have some time, but I want to be sure we aren't on the line. I would love to have him FFing and I think he would be happier, but like someone else said, he doesn't know any different at this point so he is ok.

  • still RFing for the foreseeable future. We can still talk in the car and stuff and she doesn't know any different. It was easier to get her in her seat when I moved it to the side behind the passenger instead of the middle. Whenever we have a second kid she'll have to be FF, but I don't plan for that to happen until she is almost 3 or so. She will definitely be RF until at least 2.

  • We're still rear-facing with Dyl.  He's 18months, 28lbs.  It's getting harder to lift him into the seat (can't tell you how often I've bumped his lil head on the top of the car!) but we'll keep him rear-facing until he's at the weight/height to be moved to forward.

  • M is still RF and probably will stay that way until he outgrows the seat.  I think he will outgrow it by height waaaay before he outgrows the weight limit.

  • We will turn around 2 years.  I can't wait to be able to interact with him in the car!
  • I flipped a little after a year.  He was almost ready to have to bend his knees rear facing - so thats why we flipped around.  He was (and still is) pretty tall for his age.

  • I did it about 2 months after he turned two. I was very pregnant and he was getting pretty big, so it was getting difficult for me to hoist him up into the seat. My goal was to make it to 2, so I am happy I was able to meet that. I will keep Blake RF as long as realistically possible.
