Trouble TTC

Q to ask RE about IUI, FET, IVF?

We are meeting with our RE tomorrow morning and I was wondering if anyone had some questions I should be sure to ask about IUI, FET, or IVF?

I am hoping we can narrow down a choice and be able to set up a plan for the near future.  We've had some time to think things through, and do our own research, but we don't have any experience with these treatments so I figured I'd ask you all if there is anything that you've dealt with that you never read/heard about, or didn't know prior to starting your treatments.

Re: Q to ask RE about IUI, FET, IVF?

  • **Disclaimer--I've done none of those things as far as treatment, however...

I think a lot of my questions would depnd on what was suggested.  For example, if s/he said IUI I would ask if s/he suggested B2B IUIs, what count they like to see from MH, what meds I'll take (Clomid, injects, etc).  What my chanes are?  How many follies will get me canceled?

IVF would be much of the same: what protocol, how long to stim, rate of success, etc.

  • Hey there, that is exciting and it always feels great when you get a plan in place!

It really depends on your dx. I see you have endo, have you had the surgery to clear things out? Have your gotten a HSG or SHG done? If your tubes are blocked, then there isn't a point in doing IUI. Also, you can't do an FET until you have done IVF, or have doner embryos. Do you guys have MFI? Depending on the severity IUI may not work in that case either. I would focus your questions on what would be best for you based on your dx. Then ask what goes into the procedure your RE thinks is best (meds involved, restrictions, cost, insurance coverage, and what you or your SO might need to do to prepare - tests that need to be done, whether your SO should see a urologist or not, etc).

I hope you get a plan of action. Best of luck!

    All of this!

I too have endo ::points to siggy:: and we tried 6 IUIs before deciding to move on to IVF. We have some MFI issues too so while we had just enough sperm to do IUIs, unfortunately it didn't work out for us. Whether that was from DH's morph issues, my endo, a combination of both...who knows.

    GL moving forward!

  • Some of my first questions would be what your RE thinks your chances are with IUI vs. IVF.  What meds you would take in each situation.  If she thinks any other treatment (surgery, ect) should be done before either one.  I would also ask, if your RE recommends IUI first, how many times you should try before moving to IVF.
