PCS/moving question..

Has anyone every rented a house before you saw it? Im moving to Riley and there are no openings anywhere. Its crazy. So Im thinking that if one does come open that we should just take it (im on 3 waiting lists not counting the one on post). If its horrible we only have to live there for a year. Ive never had to do this, every time we have PCSed DH was there and got something for us. So I guess im just looking for some good stories of things working out for you. Thanks.

we did in florida. we had our realtor send us a ton of pictures and a video and then we decided. we loved that house

Yes we've done this before and it was HORRIBLE. The way they portrayed their layout was not at all like in real life and our stuff simply wouldn't fit. Luckily I was able to argue the case and only sign a 3 month lease, and spent that three months living out of boxes and desperately searching for a new place.

Honestly, especially in that area, I would kind of stay away from Junction City and in town Ogden if you aren't going to see the place first. Manhattan is really nice, but can be a little bit more for cost of living. The Rivertrail townhomes are great and as long as the landlord is still the same, she is amazing!! I'm actually from the area and we were just stationed there. Let me know if you have any more questions and I'll see if I can help you.

Thanks everyone. The one we found is in Manhattan. We are actually on the waitlist for the rivertrail ones, but there are 3 people ahead of us with none coming open that they know of yet. She was really nice though. Its just been crazy trying to find somewhere. Its really annoying. I would love to just wait until Jan when we get there to be able to look at the places first, but I have a feeling if we do that we wont find anywhere, or will have to settle for somewhere really small or in Junction City.

We did that for our move from KS to MD.

There were a couple issues with the house, but the owner is awesome and helpful and it turned out great.

Just be sure to ask for pictures, talk to both the owner and agent/renter and ask anything you can think of. Make sure you get everything in writing as well.

Have we rented before seeing? Nope. If you have a place you want looked at send me the address and I'll check it out. Please, give advance notice though. Also, if you're renting off post the house/apartment has(some skirt this) to be inspected by housing. If housing has given the house an approval you should be ok.

P.S. If you are here only 1 year I'll be amazed. This place is a black hole,not in a bad way. Our original orders had us here 6 months, we'll be here 3 years in March.

Yeah they gave approval, but still im nervous haha. And I meant we could move places in a year, not move from KS. We are going to be there at least 3 years. Which im looking forward to stability. We have moved 3 times in the last 2 years, I just want to unpack for the final time and stay that way for awhile! haha.
