2nd time mom question regarding sleeping

So the post below got me thinking about sleeping arrangements. We planned on having baby go straight into their crib because I figured either way one of us would have to get outta bed to change the diaper. And we are both germ freaks so I can't imagine changing the diaper without washing hands. We planned on diaper changing in the bathroom. We have a rock n play and pack n play, so I am open to having baby in our room but it always comes back to the diaper debate in our house.

When little one is in your bed, do you change their diaper in your bed? Or where do you change their diaper?

Re: 2nd time mom question regarding sleeping

  • We keep a super soft nightlight in our room and change the baby right on our bed.  For us...it is the easiest when you are completely not with it due to lack of sleep.  We like to keep it as quiet and calm when messing with the baby at night...as to not fully arouse her making it more difficult to get her back to sleep.

  • Our first slept in the newborn part of the PnP that had a little changing station in it, that's where he was changed.

For this one, we got the rock and play to eliminate some of the space wasting that the PnP takes up, so we will probably just change him in the bed. For the first couple of weeks, we were both up anyways so it's not like one would be distrubing the other. Once we have a system/routine down, we'll play it by ear.

  • Well you can have the baby in your room without it being in your bed. Most Pack and Plays have diaper changing attachments. We are planning on changing the baby in the Pack and Play. As for hygiene, I figure I can just use a wipe or just go to the bathroom for a quick wash if I feel I need to.
  • We bought a pack n play that has the bassinet on the top with a changing table that flips up, pretty neat. We will have our girl sleep in there probably till all of the company is out of our house at about 1 month after our due date. Then she will go into her own room in her crib. We will change her on the changing table on the pack n play and we have our master bedroom with a bathroom right off of it, so we will wash hands there.

  • We've changed the diaper everywhere. We don't have a changing table. I will say though that newborns love to spray, squirt, etc. everywhere. It's amazing how far they can reach, so I wouldn't do a dark room change in our bed. We use chucks from the hospital for the early stage changes for easy cleanup when needed and I think we did most of the changes on the PnP. I'm not sure what we'll do this time since we were planning on using a bassinet.

This exactly. We'll have a changing mat to put under her, but otherwise we'll use the bed or the floor. We can go in our bathroom to wash there.

  • Baby will be sleeping next to me in a co-sleeper. I will probably change him in that, or on the bed. Last time, I snagged a huge bottle of hospital grade hand sanitizer and kept that on my nightstand.

  • With our first we never had the baby in our room. He was always in his own room and we had a changing table in there that we used. We also had a pack and play set up in a guest room downstairs with a changing table table that we used during the day. For some reason, I never minded carrying the baby into another room to change him. It also seemed easier to change him when I was standing up. I know most people will think I am nuts (my mom) and will change a baby anywhere. That is just how we did it with our first. This time, I am sure it will be different.

  • Even though I co-slept, I still took DD out of the room to nurse. I sat in the glider in the nursery so that I didnt bother DH who had to get up for work. Since the change table is in the nursery, I would just change the diaper there and then put baby back to sleep in our room while I washed my hands and then crawled back into bed.

DH and I have separate bedrooms now, but I still co-sleep with DD so I'll be doing the same thing (taking baby to nursery to nurse and change) so that I don't disturb her.

  • DS slept in our room. We got an extra changing pad and put it on our dresser.  I'm not a germ freak but we used hand sanitizer but we have a master bath attached to our bedroom so we could have washed our hands if we wanted too.  In the very beginning you have to change their diaper all the time but after a month or two they can stay in the same diaper all night.  Then you just have to feed and put back to sleep.

  • When we had DS, our PNP had a changing station on it. I used that but most of the time I would just pick up DS and change him on our bed and then put him back in his PNP. Then when he was in his crib, I changed him on his changing table. Now that I won't be using the PNP this time, I'll be changing LO on our bed or in her cradle.

If you don't mind me asking, why do you and DH have separate rooms but you cosleep with DD?

    Ask away :)

DH has asthma and bad allergies to dust (and cats, one of which we have). He snores and wheezes so loudly that I can't get a good night's sleep. I usually end up pelting him with something during the night and waking up really peeved. I would feel guilty in the morning for being so mad at him because it's not his fault, but I have IBS and chronic migraines, both of which are triggered by lack of sleep. So, I was mad, sleep deprived, and sick all the time and I just couldn't live that way anymore. I wasn't the wife/mom I wanted to be. So, the separate bedrooms came into play.

I do miss the cuddling and late night/early morning chats, but I really love that I can sleep  uninterrupted. Sometimes before bed, I'll crawl into DH's bed and we'll talk and cuddle, and then once he falls alseep and starts snoring, I go into my bed. I'll also crawl into bed with him in the morning on the weekends if I wake up early and DD is still sleeping. I am happier (and healthier) and we make it work, even though DH isn't too happy about the arrangement.

  • Change on our bed (we keep a waterproof pad under baby for leaks or spit up anyways).  If it's poopy, we go to the changing table so we can make sure to get everything nice and clean.  I have hand sanitizer in the changing table for those situations where I need to cuddle/hold baby right away and can't put her down to go to the bathroom to wash my hands.
