We skipped too. I saw no reason to go out of my way to make any and I wasn't going to spend money on it either since it offered nothing for my child except maybe constipation.
We tried it one time before skipping it with DD. Basically I just took my organic old-fashioned oats that they rest of the family eats and then I put them into the food processor until they were at a consistency that baby could eat. Then I soaked them overnight (make sure you always do this with grains). the next day I drained the water and cooked them on the stove as I would regular oats.
She hated them and like PP said, they have no real nutritional value, so we went straight to fruits and veggies.
if baby cereal is for iron and your not using it what do you feed to make sure they get iron? (sorry might be a stupid question) all I can think of is spinach lol

If you're breastfeeding there's not need to supplement with iron.
We also stuck mostly with fruits and veggies with DD1.
I second this website. We homemade all of her food but not the baby cereal because it was a pain and hard to store and it would get gummy. I bought a box of Organic oats or brown rice or something that was fortified with iron and used it when I needed to thicken one of my homemade purees.
There is a great program called The White Out campaign... https://www.drgreene.com/whiteout. If you're firm about using cereals (which really aren't particularly useful or healthful at this stage) , make it a whole grain.
I suggest giving your kiddo some baked sweet potato, mashed up. Let them touch it and poke it and smush it. That's the joy of learning to eat! If you want to spoon feed, mix it wiht breastmilk (or formula) to thin.
Good luck!

A lot of people find this site helpful when sorting through baby diet info.
