If you have a moment, please send some positive thoughts and a prayer (if you pray) for a couple of my students.
This morning, on the way to school 2 of my current students and one of my former students were in a car accident. I am unsure of all the details, but I know they had to be starflighted to the hospital. Last I heard, the 2 current students were in surgery in critical condition. I was told the female was pregnant, and wasn't far along, so I am sure she lost her baby. We are unsure of the former student because those who were told the information were only told about the current students, not realizing we all know the former student very well.
I am really worried about them. I don't know the girl very well as she is new, but I have a really good relationship with the 2 boys (they are brothers).
Thanks for any thoughts and prayers you could spare.
Re: NBR: T&P for my students needed
T&P for sure. I hope everyone pulls through.
As for the pregnant girl, early pregnancy is usually not impacted by a car accident unless there is a large amount of blood loss or resuscitative efforts were needed. In early pregnancy, the baby is so small it doesn't have enough mass for the forces of the accident to do any harm. The pelvis is a nice safe place for a baby especially one floating in fluid inside a muscle. If a car accident was so destructive as to kill an embryo, it would explode other organs too - KWIM? When the pregnancy is further along, the baby is still usually relatively safe physically but we worry more about the placental attachment/detachment.
It all depends on the nature of the accident as to why she needed surgery though =( If she wasn't wearing her seatbelt or wearing it wrong, her injuries could be anywhere really but the most common reason most of our patients go directly into the OR is because of Orthopedic problems (think bony things sticking out...)
In any case, I want to dispell the myth that a bad car accident automatically means you lose your baby.
Thanks, I didn't realize that. The extent of her injuries are fully unknown, but I do know that she has major head trama--physical loss-kwim w/o tmi?
